    First Thirty: Far Cry 2

    By Joe Haygood | October 28, 2008

First Thrity is series I hope to do on a regular basis with all the games I have to review and purchase.  It will give players some insight into the beginnings of the game, as well as a nice way to compare initial feelings about the game with the end review.  The debut game for this series is Far Cry 2, which I started playing on the PC.

Far Cry 2, starts off with an expanded intro sequence done completely in game, allowing you to look around at your surroundings, while giving you some backstory on the country that you have decided to visit.  The graphics in the game are stunning, with lots of detail in all areas you visit.  I am running the game at 1920×1200, with everything set to Very High, and it runs like a dream, easily clearing 30 fps.

New Prince of Persia “Light and Dark Art” Trailer

    By Joe Haygood | October 28, 2008

Ubisoft released a new trailer for Prince of Persia yesterday, and again, it shows off the wonderful art direction that is happening with this new installment.  The trailer gives a little backstory on what has happened with the struggle between light and dark, and who our female companion represents.

Aeropodcast #49: My Posse’s In Dead Space

    By Joe Haygood | September 15, 2008

Stephen, Fourhman and Joe take a jump in space to the ISS Ishimura to visit with Andrew Green of Electronic Arts and discuss some of the finer points of Dead Space. We get a little primer on what makes Dead Space tick, mixed in with other details of the game and its development process. We also discuss www.noknownsurvivors.com, which tells the immense backstory to all the info used to flesh out the universe and the characters.

Also, we were grateful for all the user contributions, we had questions about our day jobs, what our first game platform was, favorite game and even if we could have some community gaming nights. Fear Hunter 102 asked for some help with gaining access to the clock tower in Dead Rising, and we read our two new iTunes reviews, including one that demanded compensation for being the 10 review!

We also wanted to put a link to the Resident Evil Children’s activity book, courtesy of The Minus World at http://the-minusworld.com/2008/09/11/the-resident-evil-activity-book-for-kids/

Thanks as always to Mixmaster Stephen and his wheels of steel for mixing the podcast this week, and to Revolution Void for our bumper music. You can find them at www.revolutionvoid.com.

Deux Ex 3 Coming Out Party Next Month

    By Joe Haygood | September 8, 2008

It looks like Ubisoft Montreal is getting ready to pull back the curtain on their upcoming title, Deus Ex 3.  Beyond a name and a development studio, we have heard nothing about this title in any way, shape or form.

Now it looks like Euro mag, PC Zone is getting the inside scoop on Deus Ex 3 next month with a cover article for their October 2008 magazine.  The teaser shot shows off what looks to be a man, and the tag line “The conspiracy is revealed…”.  It also shows a sale date of October 9th.

Deus Ex was hearalded for its top notch story, as well as the modular style of gaming.  Like to hack things and sneak around, go for it, but if you want to be a guns blazing Maverick, then play it that way.  It is all up to you.  Unfortunately, the sequel was hampered with bad design choices, including the idea to port the console version over to the PC, which was hated by most players.  Will Deus Ex 3 fix the problems that came up with the second one, or will it be another case of catering the game to the casual crowd?  We will follow up on October 7th.

Far Cry 2 PAX Developer Diary: Immersion

    By Joe Haygood | August 29, 2008

Clint Hawking gives players the lowdown on how Far Cry 2 will stress immersion into the game world that will surround them.  As you use weapons, they will degrade and break down, eventually leading to their demise.  The glider is back from the first Far Cry, along with boats and cars you will use to get around the island.  And vehicles can break down, requiring repair, which is a first that I can think of in an FPS shooter.  Also they go over injuries and how they need to be fixed.  I for one, did not need the dislocation repair, as it brings back ugly memories of a dislocated finger I reset once.

Far Cry 2 is really shaping up to be a great looking shooter, but I do have to wonder if FPS players are going to enjoy guns that will eventually blow up and need to be replaced, or having to stop and fix their vehicles.  I like that idea, because it does set your mindframe towards being in the game, but some buy an FPS to shoot first and pick up turkey dinners later.

New Prince of Persia Developer Diary

    By Joe Haygood | August 29, 2008

Ubisoft Montreal, the developers of the new Prince of Persia game, have released a new developer diary for your consumption.  Some of the highlights, include the new roof run move, story hints, and some insight on how the new combat works.  Not sure how anyone else feels about this new Prince of Persia, but I am hooked on the art design for the characters and levels.  It just has a surreal look that feel that works well with the combat and acrobatics of the Prince.

I want to know if the prop sword in the video will be a pack in for the collectors edition.  C’mon Ubisoft, if it is good enough for Gears, it is good enough for Prince of Persia.

Beyond Good and Evil only a fiver this weekend on Steam

    By Stephen Munn | August 24, 2008

On the Steam gaming download service, Michel Ancel’s excellent Beyond Good and Evil is a mere $4.99 this weekend only. This is a great opportunity for those who’ve not yet had a chance to play through the game.

This is valid for customers in North America only, so regrets to those in other regions. Though, you have other things to be pleased with that make this look stupid by comparison, such as good beer and people who can properly pronounce the name of Nintendo of America’s president.

Why sure, I’ll cover Babysitting Party

    By Joe Fourhman | August 22, 2008

I’m actually kinda diggin’ these screenshots.

This is Babysitting Party, coming to Wii sometime this year. The publisher? Ubisoft, the company that has already smelled blood in the water by releasing a zillion games like Just Imagine: Paralegal and Petz Dragonz (which was retitled “Lair” for the PS3 version). But hey, this is how they’re funding Beyond Good & Evil 2, so hush your mouth.

But this isn’t another bash-on-casual post; this is just to show you Babysitting Party’s info doc. Without any editorial comment.

    Far Cry 2 = Afrika + Guns

    By Joe Haygood | August 17, 2008

Anyone that listens to UncleGamer radio might have heard Paris preach his love of Afrika for the PS3.  He said the only thing that seems to be missing is guns.  Well lucky for him, it seems that Far Cry 2 will be able to satisfy that urge for him to shoot at stuff while admiring the African wilderness.  This trailer is from the PC version of the game, and just looks fantastic.  And the money shot in the trailer had to be pulling the knife or arrow out of his leg…priceless!

Jake Looks Ripped As the Prince

    By Joe Haygood | August 12, 2008

Some pictures have been snapped on the set of Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and I have to say that as of right now, it looks like the film is really nailing the look of the prince, albeit the wrong game version.  Jake Gyllenhaal (dude, change up some letters already), is looking positively ripped as The Prince, but he looks more like the Warrior Within version of the character.  That said, at least they are looking more accurate than most game character conversions.

While Jake does look the role, we do have to wait an extra year to see how this movie will translate from the small screen to the big screen, as the movie has been delayed by one year for release.  That said, I hope to see The Prince wall-running, jumping and swashbuckling with the demons from the Sands of Time in the Summer of 2010.

Currently the script is using the Sands of Time plotline, and has Jake Gyllenhaal playing a prince by the name of Dastan, who teams up with Tamina (played by Gemma Arterton), a princess from a far away land to keep an evil man from unleashing the Sands of Time upon the Earth.  Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus), and Ben Kingsley (slumming in B- movie hell) are also signed to be in the movie, with one of them most likely signed on as the bad guy.
