This just in: God Of War III will be a big game on the PS3. I know, such a shock, right? I picked up my copy today from Toys R Us to get the $20 Gift Card for Rewards Club members from 10am to 2pm (thanks CAG). I wasn’t alone, either. A coworker tagged along after yanking on my chair repeatedly at work and saying “Hurry up they’re going to sell out of all of them!”

He was talking about The Princess Frog coming out on Blu-ray and DVD today, though, which he needed to pick up for his 5-year-old girl today.

Check out the new Chaos Trailer from the PlayStation Blog above or, if you’re like me, don’t click on it to avoid spoiling the story. I read the first page of the Official PlayStation Magazine review on Sunday evening when I was desperate for reading material and wish I hadn’t since it stupidly gave away a very early plot twist. It also gave it 5 stars, of course.

Enjoy! Full Sony press release after the jump.
God of War(R) III Brings a Thrilling End to the Epic Trilogy, Exclusively for the PlayStation(R)3 System

Final Installment of the Blockbuster Franchise Showcases the Power of the PS3(TM) system With Larger-Than-Life Gameplay, Stunning Graphics, and Legendary Storytelling to Provide Consumers the Adventure of a Lifetime

FOSTER CITY, Calif., March 16 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) today announced the North American release of God of War® III, exclusively for the PlayStation®3 (PS3(TM)) system. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment’s award-winning Santa Monica Studios, God of War III is the final installment of the multi-million unit-selling trilogy that brings epic battles to life with stunning graphics, groundbreaking depths of scale, and signature gameplay along with an elaborate plot placing ex-Spartan warrior Kratos at the center of carnage and destruction as he seeks revenge against the Gods who have betrayed him.

Utilizing a new game engine built from the ground up and state-of-the-art visual technologies, the development team behind God of War III has made standard-setting strides in giving players the realistic feel of actually being on the battlegrounds. With texture resolutions quadrupling since God of War® II on the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, God of War III, in its debut on the PS3 system, will feature fluid, life-like characters, as well as dynamic lighting effects, a robust weapon system, and world-changing scenarios that will truly bring unmistakable realism to Kratos’ fateful quest. Players will have a chance to join battles on a grand scale that is four times larger than its predecessor, while experiencing detailed and unique 3D worlds lit by thousands of dynamic lights and textures that allow for astonishing realism and new heightened levels of brutality and gore.

“Since its announcement last spring and our demonstration shown at E3 2009, God of War III has remained one of the most eagerly anticipated titles in recent memory,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President, Product Marketing, SCEA. “With this unique experience, our development team has truly set a new bar for the video game industry, leveraging the power of the PS3 to create a technical masterpiece that couples jaw-dropping visuals with a gripping story sure to amaze fans and newcomers alike.”

Set in the realm of brutal Greek mythology, God of War III picks up where the franchise left off allowing players to take on the climatic role of Kratos as he scales through the intimidating heights of Mt. Olympus and the dark depths of Hades to seek revenge on the gods. Armed with double-chained blades, and an array of new weapons and magic for this iteration of the trilogy, Kratos must take on mythology’s darkest creatures while solving intricate puzzles throughout his merciless quest to destroy Olympus.

God of War III is a single-player action-adventure that has an ESRB rating of “M” for Mature. For more information about the ESRB, visit www.esrb.org. For more information about the God of War franchise, visit www.GodofWar.com.

God of War Storyline

Set in the dark world of ancient Greek mythology, players take on the role of Kratos, a Spartan warrior. Plagued by the nightmares of his past, the ash covered warrior would do anything to be free of his debt to the Gods and the memories that haunt him. For ten years he has labored for Olympus, now on the verge of losing all hope, the Gods have given him one last task. Destroy Ares, the God of War. Armed with the deadly chained Blades of Chaos, Kratos will have to overcome armies of mythological monsters, legions of undead soldiers, and amazingly dangerous and brutal landscapes.

God of War II Storyline

God of War saw Kratos, a mortal warrior, set upon an epic quest to dethrone a God. But his journey did not end there. In God of War II, Kratos sits atop his Olympus throne, as the new God of War – far more ruthless than Ares ever was. To end his continued torment, Kratos must journey to the far reaches of the earth and defeat untold horrors and alter that which no mortal, or god has ever changed … his fate. God of War sets an epic stage for a devastating mythological war to end all wars.

Acclaim for the God of War Franchise

God of War releases have set the bar for the action-adventure genre and been acknowledged by some of the videogame industry’s key publications, which include PlayStation: The Official Magazine (Editor’s Choice Award), Game Informer (Action/Adventure Game of the Year and Handheld Game of the Month Award), GamePro (Editor’s Choice Award), Electronic Gaming Monthly (Best PS2 Game), IGN.com (Editor’s Choice Award and Game of the Year Award), and four nominations in the Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, including Overall Game of the Year and Console Game of the Year. The franchise has also been awarded with several honors including several E3 Best of Game Awards (given by several online publications), numerous Game of the Year and Best Action Game Awards (given at Spike TV’s Video Game Awards, Golden Joystick Awards, PSX Extreme Awards and the 3rd Annual G-Phoria Awards, and by PAX, GameZone, GameDaily, GameSpot), to name just a few.

After hearing on the PS Nation Podcast 156 that High Velocity Bowling will support the Move, I perked up. I’d been waiting for an excuse to pick that one up, and that’s a good one. Once they also mentioned that SOE was signed on, I was able to connect the dots.

What dots? The “How can they put Free Realms on the PS3 when it’s completely stuffed with mouse-control mini games? Nobody has a mouse on the PS3!” dots. They’re gonna use the Move, and I think that would be fun!

Granted that’s my prediction, and nothing’s been announced, but it makes total sense. Anyway, check out the full Move press release after the jump, including the list of developers that have pledged support. Are any studios you like on the list?
PlayStation(R)Move Motion Controller Delivers a Whole New Entertainment Experience to PlayStation(R)3

New PlayStation(R)Move Sub-Controller, Enabling Intuitive Navigation, to Accompany the Release of the Motion Controller This Fall and 36 Developers and Publishers to Support PlayStation(R)Move Platform

TOKYO, March 10 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced that PlayStation®Move motion controller for PlayStation®3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system launches worldwide this fall, offering a motion-based, high-definition gaming experience unlike anything on the market. Concurrently with its launch, SCE will also release PlayStation®Move sub-controller to be used along with the motion controller for intuitive navigation of in-game characters and objects. The PlayStation Move platform, including the motion controller, sub-controller, and PlayStation®Eye camera*(1), together with a strong lineup of software titles, will deliver an innovative and highly immersive experience on the PS3 system.

The combination of the PS3 system and PlayStation Eye camera detects the precise movement, angle, and absolute position in 3D space of PlayStation Move motion controller, allowing users to intuitively play the game as if they themselves are within the game. PlayStation Move motion controller delivers unmatched accuracy through its advanced motion sensors, including a three-axis gyroscope, a three-axis accelerometer, and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor, as well as a color-changing sphere that is tracked by PlayStation Eye camera. Through PlayStation Move system, both fast and subtle motion can be detected, whether the user is swinging a tennis racket, or painting with a brush. With PlayStation Move motion controller, users can provide direct input through action buttons and an analog trigger, while receiving physical feedback from rumble functionality and visual feedback from the sphere’s ability to display a variety of different colors. Furthermore, PlayStation Eye camera can capture the player’s voice or image, enabling augmented reality experiences.

The newly announced PlayStation Move sub-controller is a one-handed controller, developed to further expand the game play options that PlayStation Move games can offer*(2). PlayStation Move sub-controller features a sleek curved design that pairs with the motion controller and comes with an analog stick and directional buttons that allow users to easily control the game when moving characters or choosing a direction. Like all other Wireless Controllers for the PS3 system, it comes with a built in lithium-ion rechargeable battery as well as Bluetooth® technology, enabling the controller to transfer the input information wirelessly to the PS3 system without a cable. PlayStation Move motion controller and sub-controller will further broaden the gaming experience on the PS3 system for all genres, from games that use one motion controller to games that use both controllers.

The introduction of PlayStation Move controllers has been well received within the industry and now 36 third party developers and publishers*(3) have decided to support PlayStation Move platform. In fiscal year 2010, SCE Worldwide Studios will also release more than 20 games that are either dedicated to or supported with the PlayStation Move platform.

SCE, with strong support from software developers and publishers, will deploy various measures to enhance the PlayStation Move software title line-up and vigorously promote the PS3 platform.

*(1) Users will need to use the PlayStation Eye camera to enjoy PlayStation Move motion controller on PS3.

*(2) DUALSHOCK® or SIXAXIS® Wireless Controller can also be used in place of the sub controller.

*(3) Please refer to the attached list below for detail.

The soundtrack is due out on iTunes and Sumthing Digital on March 16th (alongside the game itself) followed by a CD release on Amazon on the 30th.

I’m a very big fan of the God of War II soundtrack and will likely pick up the CD version.

This track doesn’t disappoint, following very strongly in the thematic footsteps of its predecessor. Give it a listen. It makes buying the full soundtrack a no-brainer for me.

This is probably the last time that you will get to see Fourhman’s wonderful a-bomb Photoshop work, but we at Aeropause thought the recent issues with Sony’s console deserved a quick podcast. It is a bit informal, but we just talk about what happened and how we as PS3 owners felt about it. Listen in and enjoy.

I’d wager that the founders of MM held out as long as they could for a really sweet deal, and frankly, given the unmitigated success of LittleBigPlanet can you blame them? They did just recently celebrate their 2 millionth user created level. They’ve also got a new RSS feed and Twitter setup to highlight their level picks. Now where’s that social networking thing they wanted to do where you could click a level on the web and queue it up on your PS3 to download, hm?

At any rate I’m very happy to see this finally come to pass because we all know full well that Sony’s taken a beating in the market share department this generation — Monster Hunter 3 is coming to the Wii for crissakes! If I were Media Molecule I would’ve started most every conversation with Sony with the words “You know Microsoft sold another 300,000 systems last month, that’s a lot of potential level builders, don’t you think?” or “Hey, that Wii developer kit isn’t hard at all!”

Update 3: I can confirm Joystiq’s advice to get Trophies back worked for me. I put the game in, loaded it, exited to the XMB, then sync’d Trophies and the Trophies I had earned in God of War were back.

Update 2: Sony’s saying service is restored on the PS Blog. No mention of Trophy issues.

Update: It looks like pre-slim PS3’s are working now, and awarding Trophies with the correct date and time. Sony hasn’t yet made an announcement, though. (Gamespot)

Turns out that the PSN wasn’t broken — at least that’s what they’re saying even though Sony’s site now looks suspiciously like it was upgraded recently — it’s some aspect of the clock within the PlayStation 3 systems themselves that’s busted, but only with non-Slim PS3’s. Sony’s working on a fix, and in the meantime they’re advising everyone with “phat” PS3’s to not use them at all (thanks, Joystiq). And really, Fourhman’s mushroom cloud image was too good to not use again.

The leading theory is that some part of the PS3 wants 2010 to be a leap year while the real calendar knows better. The conflict within the PS3’s firmware is what caused the calendar to party like it’s 1999 and it’s still not yet known if lost Trophy data is going to come back when Sony finds a fix.

This is a pretty mean black eye for its older systems, in addition to the Yellow Light of Death they have gotten from time to time, too. In the meantime, I’ll be playing my PSP and hoping my couple of days of unsync’d God of War trophies will come back when the fix is in.

Many games have hard drive installs, so much so that when I was headed to a friend’s house to game with him last weekend, I actually brought my own PS3 along since his hard drive was almost full. How else could we play a new game that would need to be installed before we started up?

Today a Sony Santa Monica employee tweeted that God of War III will not have a hard drive install. This puts the upcoming rage-fest in a camp alongside Uncharted 2 and a few select other games that have been able to avoid these installs.

Really, though, it’s just another reason to buy this game sooner rather than later, and I didn’t really need any more reasons given how great the most recent trailer is. Take a peek above at the trailer from the PS Blog.

There’s been so much hype – and rumour – about Microsoft’s and Sony’s ventures into motion control, it’s hard to decipher the fact from fiction. This, I hope – a GDC 10 session entitled Introducing the PlayStation 3 Motion Controller – should finally help Sony put the rumours to rest.

Informally entitled ‘The Arc”, Sony’s motion controller is . . . well, exactly what you see in the picture: a stick with a ball at the end. But SCEA’s Platform Research Manager David Coombes and Kirk Bender intend to illustrate to delegates on 11 March 2010 that it will enable developers to “to create new game play experiences, by allowing players to interact with their console in high definition using their bodies.”

So . . . exactly like the Wiimote does already. Obviously.

It’ll be the first time we see the controller since it debuted at last year’s E3. What do you think of it?

SiliconEra has had coverage of the Japanese edition of 3D Dot Game Heroes from Atlus on and off for a while now but now that it’s coming stateside this May it’s getting picked up in more local venues. The PlayStation Blog recently talked up the in-game editor allowing you to make your own 3D pixel-art-style avatar for the hero, letting you play as any number of things: a spider, a shark fin, a gorilla, or even a classic Link-like hero. The game doesn’t care what you look like, and the editor also sports the ability to export your creation to a USB drive and upload it to a character sharing portal they’ll have set up for the US launch.

The mechanics of the game also don’t seem to care what crazy kind of thing your hero is. It just wants to entertain you. An IGN preview noted that the four classes to choose — Hero, Prince, Princess, or Scholar — only change the “genuinely witty” dialogue that’s got “plenty of self-referential humor”. Your equipment and weapons are the same across all four classes. And given the flexibility of the editor, all sorts of species too.
