So we finally got a look at DC Universe and it looks pretty good. Obviously, you don’t get to play as the great DC characters, but you will get to play alongside them in battle. They mentioned scenarios like working with Batman to solve a crime, or joining with Lex Luthor to battle Superman. The ideas are endless, but they did not explain how the mechanics of this would work. Is it instanced for groups of players, or open to the entire server population. No release date was set. Also, I was disheartened when I watched this, as I felt that using this premise but in a Marvel setting, could of been great. *sniff, oh well, at least it is looking good for one of the comic universes out there.
So Midway has finally released some gameplay footage for their upcoming fighting game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC, and I have to say that I am impressed. The fighting looks good, especially the fact that you can now continue to fight while dropping between levels. The effects look good, and fatalaties are definitely in, as well can guess from the fate of poor Flash. About the only complaint that I had was that the fighting did seem deliberatly slower than in the past. Not bad, but just strange, as I have always thought of Mortal Kombat as a fast fighter.
We also got to see some of the characters that will be in the game. We now can confirm that Superman, Batman, Flash, Catwoman, Sub Zero, Scorpion, Sonya Blade, and what appeared to be Cabal maybe. I lost track of all the characters in the MK universe after the third one. Look for MK vs DC on December 15th.
A week or so ago, the May ‘08 edition of Paste magazine found its way into my mailbox. For those not in the know, Paste is a monthly magazine that covers music, film, and culture while generally hovering over the Indie interests in those areas. It’s all part of the necessities for one to keep their ear to the street and maintain their Indie cred. Now you’re probably asking yourself what does a magazine that is mostly about music have to do with video games. Well, besides an article about independent game developers making their way into the mainstream, there’s a piece entitled The Diary of a Video Game RPG Hero.
A few years ago, Marvel sued NCSoft and City of Heroes developer Cryptic Studios for copyright infringement. The basis of the suit had to do with characters that resembled Marvel characters being made in the game. The suit was settled out of court and in a weird twist of irony, Marvel selected Cryptic to make an MMO based in the Marvel Universe.
From that point, all we have seen or heard of this title was a teaser trailer. No real news has been heard until the last few weeks. Rumor was that Microsoft was cutting a big first party project. The web was alight with people trying to guess which title was on the chopping block. Was it Alan Wake? Or maybe Halo Wars? Possibly a Banjo Kazooie title? All of the developers for these projects as well as others stepped up and announced that their titles were still firmly in development and were not in the process of being cancelled.

While I was at the inaugural E for All Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center, I had the chance to meet with Dante and Jeremy of Crave Online. Why the Beatles song for a title? Because it won’t leave my head after my wife finished watching the Lennon/McCarthy edition of “The Singing Bee”.
