    R-Type Command: Tactical Shmup!

    By Kelly Monfort | August 26, 2008

R-Type. Who among us can deny the awesomeness of this game? From the late 80’s to the early 90’s this game dominated the Side-Scrolling Shmup genre. Now someone has turned it into a tactical turn based shmup.  Who? Atlus is who, famous for it’s turn based RPG’s like Etrian Odyssey and Operation Darkness.  However they have taken it a bit further in their diverse game selection to include R-Type Command. Let me tell you, they have done a fine job!

    Persona 4 Trailer Drops

    By Joe Haygood | July 11, 2008

Atlus has released a full fledged trailer for their upcoming title, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4.  The trailer is not the best of quality, but looks to introduce most of the new characters, and gives us some of the new dialogue and action sequences.  Persona 4 is already out in Japan, but will hit US shores on December 9th.  Make sure to buy on the first day, as Atlus tends to ignore customer demand to make additional printings.

Shin Megami Tensei Panel To Be At Anime Expo 2008

    By Joe Haygood | June 25, 2008

The Shin Megami Tensei, or more commonly known here as Persona, has become a huge hit here in the states.  The first version of Persona 3 went out of print very fast on word of mouth, and the Persona 3: FES package went on and off of shelves faster than the first game.

Well the developers of the Persona franchise have a panel at the upcoming Anime Expo 2008 festival at the Los Angeles Convention Center.  Several of the voice actors for the games as well as the developer talent will be at the show, discussing the production of the Persona games, as well as some of the challenges in designing a game that has such a rabid cult following.

The conference is set for July 5th, 2008 at 6:30PM.  The audience is limited to 500 people, and there is a special gift to all that attend the panel.

Persona 3: FES Coming In April

    By Joe Haygood | February 25, 2008

    smt_persona-3.jpg

Many people, like myself, missed Persona 3 when it came out in August of 2007. It became a huge hit for Atlus and sold out of shops everywhere. Trying to get a copy now is a futile effort, as stores are out of both the retail and used version of the game. I even voiced my displeasure over not being able to find a copy in a podcast a few weeks ago. Well, Atlus is coming to my rescue, by releasing an enhanced edition of the game that includes the original game, but has been enhanced with the expansion pack that was released in Japan earlier in Japan.

The expansion pack was suppose to be released with the requirement of needing the original game, but Atlus changed their mind and decided to give gamers a chance to get the full Persona 3 experience by merging the two products. Original players will be able to transfer their saves if they already own Persona 3 into the new expansion pack. Look for the release in stores April 22nd, 2008.

Dengeki Online details Wii-specific Baroque features.

    By Stephen Munn | December 22, 2007

The Wiire has some new information on what the developers will be doing in bringing the PS2 RPG Baroque to Wii, and it’s a pretty impressive read. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Wii port get this much hands-on time to make it better suit the platform. It will be interesting to see how it turns out in the end.

Two controller options will be available: Wii Remote and Nunchuk with first-person mode and motion controls, or Classic Controller support. Widescreen support will also be added for this version.

First-person is an interesting choice. Nintendo’s Zelda team experimented with the idea of a first-person Zelda during the development of Twilight Princess and eventually canned the idea, but perhaps we’ll see that in the future. It seems like a good idea if you’re planning to use the motion or IR controls directly. It’s obviously more intuitive to hit something with an object by waving the controller in its direction.

Screenshots are also at the links, if you’d like to see some of that.

Atlus announces mech SRPG Drone Tactics, hope it’s good

    By Stephen Munn | December 20, 2007

ATLUS-128-DronePkgPromoSmall.JPGFinally, a game that plays to my long-running fantasy of pitting an army of Insecticons against an army of… well, more Insecticons. This newly-announced game will bring us turn-based strategy with giant insect mechs fighting other giant insect mechs. There’s an official website and everything, and even some box art (at left) and a release date next March. Unfortunately, the website’s got nothing visual for us yet, so not much reason to bother visiting just now. Some tiny screens can be seen under “Drones” if you like, but they’re too small to be worthwhile.

Wireless local play is mentioned for the game. Looks like online play is out, that could have worked out nicely.

I enjoy turn-based strategy more than that other kind, just don’t tell my copy of Warcraft III. It’s already in a fragile state from how long I put off buying it and then how little I’ve played it since. Sad, considering it’s one of the only games I have that will run on my Mac.

Atlus bringing RPG Baroque’s song to the west in 2008.

    By Stephen Munn | December 12, 2007

ATLUS-127-collage.jpgHey, wasn’t I just whining about RPGs yesterday? The Wii could really use one already, it’s been, what, a year?

Atlus will be bringing developer Sting’s RPG Baroque (which came out in Japan this year) to the US for February 2008, which is shaping up to be a busy month with No More Heroes and Brawl already packed in there nicely.

You awaken to find the world in ruin, your heart beset with unexplained guilt. A cataclysm has destroyed the cities and empires of men and disfigured the spirit of humanity. In this nightmare, it falls to you to descend a mysterious tower in search of absolution. Battle merciless foes through treacherous dungeons, scour for new items to aid you in your travels, and unlock the secrets of a devastated land. You will find death in the depths, yet learn that death is not the end of the story; in the twisted world of Baroque, it is only the beginning.

One of the more interesting features of the “hardcore” RPG? Dying does not end the game, it only sends you to another world. That’s pretty unusual. View a movie that shows very little gameplay right here, at the official website. Most of the links on the site, such as those for screenshots, are inactive.
