Daggerdale is a game that I wanted to enjoy from its initial announcement. It is one of the first D&D games to use the new Edition 4 rule set and it was supposed to be a great hack and slash grind fest that would have me coming back again and again, like I did with Torchlight and Diablo. Instead, it feels as if Bedlam decided it wanted to be different from those great games, and created something that is buggy, difficult and for the most part boring. When a game continuously has you falling asleep at the wheel because you have lost any interest in the game, you have failed, and unfortunately, this is what Daggerdale brings to the table.

Daggerdale sets up a simple tale with main heavy Rezlus building a tower that will encase all the evil guys in the world, with the goal to take over the world. Of course, we cannot stand for this, and you choose one of four classes (Cleric, Fighter, Rogue or Mage) to take on Rezlus’ minions with the hope of saving the world. It is pretty cookie cutter for this type of game, but it seems like there was little to no effort to make anything interesting about the story. I never cared about the main boss, and the enemies were so generic at times that I stopped paying attention to them and would just hit buttons on my way to the endgame, all the while picking up sweet loot.

Loot is where the game does pick up some steam. The items you get from enemies in Daggerdale are surprisingly useful, and they come along at a pretty good clip. Sometimes a little too quick, as there were several times I would get items that were well beyond my current level. There is no feeling worse than picking up a sword that I cannot use for two more levels. And selling it is not an option, because you get completely ravaged by the merchants in the game. But the items you get to add some customization to your character, which is completely lacking at the beginning of the game, as character looks, are completely fixed. If you want customizable characters, you will not find it here.

Speaking of merchants, it would be nice to see these characters maybe stock up on certain items, like health potions, and maybe offer more reasonable rates on equipment when selling or buying items. At one point I had a pretty bad ass sword, but I found an even better one, so I decided to sell the old one and got a couple hundred gold for it, which I thought was a good deal. Until I saw that the merchant turned around and was selling it for about six times the price. Also, things like health potions do not seem to restock or they do not restock fast enough, as you go through them pretty quick when you get into the thick of battle, or come across a completely unbalanced enemy in the middle of what should be generic combat fodder.

And let’s not talk about save points, as they seem to be completely broken. See, there were several times where I ended up having to replay whole sections of the game, as the game seems to only save at certain quest points, rather than where you actually save the game. Note to Bedlam – do not include a Save Game option in your menu if it is not going to save my place in the game. XIII made the same mistake years ago and I still hate it for that reason.

While all of these problems are troublesome, the main reason that I never enjoyed the game is because it bored the piss out of me. Many times, I found myself nodding off because the game felt so uninspired, or I found myself tired of losing a battle to an enemy that had sunk into the ground, or became invisible due to the many bugs that are still in Daggerdale.

Co-op could be a way to save the Daggerdale experience, except the game fails on this aspect as well. First was the problem that my friend that I was going to play with had the same character that I did, which is not allowed, so one of us had to create a new character, which left one of us under leveled, and bugs with connectivity and gameplay greeted us along the way as well.

As it stands right now, Daggerdale is a mess in its current state. It might get better with a half a dozen patches or so, but right now, I cannot see why this is a better alternative to the much more refined Torchlight on Xbox Live. Unless you are a super D&D fan that has to have 4th edition rules or bust, you can do so much better than Daggerdale. Dungeons and Dragons Daggerdale gets 1.5 out of 5 Aeropausonauts.

It seems that Atari has not been happy with the performance that has been occurring over at Cryptic Studios, and has started the process of finding a buyer for the studio, or it will start “unwinding operations”, code speak for shuttering the company.

Cryptic Studios had developed a name for itself with Company of Heroes and followed that up with Company of Villians, and it was fairly successful, but when it was snapped up by Atari, it was then tasked with two more MMO titles, Champions Online and Star Trek Online, with both titles severely underperforming early company estimates.

Cryptic tried to stem the flow, sending Champions Online to the Free to Play model, and it had been rumored that Star Trek Online would do the same, but it seems that both will meet an untimely end at some point in their futures. Atari has stated that they will be providing support and updates for both titles in the near future, but nothing was clear about the life of either franchise.

Is it too soon to say another MMO bites the dust.

Atari has done it again. After Missile Command and Yar’s Revenge, Centipede is getting a reimagining, moving away from the simple action feature in the 80′s classic, instead moving the game into the isometric shooter genre. Centipede Infestation seats your character into a number of different stages that have been overrun by bugs, that you are only too happy to destroy with your guns.

Okay, I don’t know how it relates to the original Centipede either, but Atari seems to be looking for anyway to live off of its former glory. Sad thing is that these remakes never tend to live up to the simple greatness contained in a 4K cartridge.

Check out a trailer for the action and let us know if you want this reimagining trend to continue, or stop for the sake of humanity. Well, at least Fourhman will have something new to play on his 3DS as it is coming to that platform as well as the Wii.

Now, there is no word on why we are getting Ghostbusters 2.0 team versus the orignal classic members that we know and love (probably monetary demands), but we are getting a new team. That said, the team fits the same kind of stereotypes that were in the first one. We have the scientist geek, the happy go lucky guy, the workhorse and the wiseguy, err, wisegirl.

Take a look at all the new Ghostbusters after the jump. Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime is set for release on March 23rd, 2011 from Atari for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Atari and Eden Games have finally released Test Drive Unlimited 2 to retail shelves, and from all accounts and early reviews, the game looks like it is definitely improving on the first game. To celebrate the launch, we received a handful of new screens and a launch trailer that shows off all the features and mechanics that you will see in Test Drive Unlimited 2.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 is out for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 from Atari and Eden Games. For all the screens, trailer and a nicely worded press release, hit the jump.

As for our case mod, I would love to say that the girl comes as a standard accessory to this Chopper case mod, but it would only lead to disappointment. That said, if you can aim your eyes at the case, you will find the frame of a chopper that has been converted to fit all the parts you need in a top notch PC. Of course, the young lady does help present it quite nicely. If you want to read more, head over to Unreality.com to check this out as well as several custom case mods.

Make sure to check out the other Ones to Watch articles for Xbox 360, PS3/PSP and Wii/DS to find all the games that you should be picking up in the month of February. Also, if you enjoy the article, take a look around the site and let us know what you think. We always appreciate the feedback. Untill next month, keep on gaming.

Two Worlds II (Topware/Southpeak Games) – The first two worlds title was received with a little less zeal than Topware and Southpeak thought it would receive. A lot of that disappointment came from a development team that had to port a formerly PC only title to a new console architecture in a short period of time. It lead to a rather average title. Two Worlds II looks to rectify that, by having an engine that is fully optimized for the PC, while creating an experience that will suck players into the storyline and action. Recently, I started in on the Xbox 360 version of Two Worlds II and while it is a little on the rough side with polish, it continues to have me plugging away at the title for a couple hours each night. Add in a huge world that is filled with all kind of things to do and you have a lot of value for your purchase. Look for Two Worlds II on February 8th, 2010.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 (Atari/Eden Games) – Test Drive Unlimited was a solid title that unfortunately did not get enough of the optimization needed to make it a great PC title. But instead of just canning development on a sequel for the PC, Eden Games has gone back and has made sure that the quality is there this time around for PC gamers. The game is looking fantastic on a solid rig and has all the features that have been touted in the press about the new physics engine modeling for the 90+ cars in the game, as well as the two resort communities – Ibiza and Oahu. It is still going to take some blind faith that the PC version is getting enough treatment on its own, but so far from the early looks, it seems to be shaping up as a great car and lifestyle title for the PC. Look for Test Drive Unlimited 2 on February 8th, 2011.

You Don’t Know Jack (THQ/Jellyvision) – Ah, the prodigal son returns to his roots, as You Don’t Know Jack finally comes out of hibernation to revisit a new breed of gamer. Yes, it has been awhile since the last You Don’t Know Jack graced the small screen, but THQ has brought it back and is keeping all the things that we loved about the original titles, while adding new features like online play. Online play is a big plus when it comes to a trivia game, as it always sucks to play one by yourself. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for You Don’t Know Jack as the hitch for most trivia titles is running out of original questions. If they are looking at DLC packs to keep the questions fresh, it could be a banner year for trivia nuts. Otherwise, the fun might end a little earlier than you want. You Don’t Know Jack will hit shelves on February 8th, 2011.

Bulletstorm (Epic Games/Electronic Arts) – Who doesn’t like a great shooter that has you leashing a guy from his position into the air, shooting him in the crotch and then kicking him into a spiked pole. I mean, what is not to like about any of that. Bulletstorm looks to take the standard FPS formula, but mix in the idea of chaining together combos for point totals. It also has a vibe of old school Doom and titles of that ilk where you are racing against the clock to get to the end of a level under the recommended time. No word on how leaderboards will be handled, but if they have a way to build a friends list that you can compare scores to one another, it will definitely help push people to better their rankings. I do have to wonder whether the point combo mechanic will get old, but with the early hands on, it does look like a ton of fun. Look for Bulletstorm on February 22nd, 2011.

Assassins Creed: Brotherhood (Ubisoft) - Assassins Creed II was kind of a bad scar on PC players everywhere. Saddled with a rather cumbersome and intrusive DRM system, and plagued with a lack of optimization, it never reached the mass of the first Assassins Creed on PC. Assassins Creed Brotherhood looks to change that with a better optimization for PC players as welll as throwing out the always on DRM scheme. Now, you will only need to connect to the DRM servers at the point of install as well as when using the new multiplayer component. This new mode has you marked as a target by a random player in the game, while you yourself have your own target that you have to assassinate. If it sounds reminiscnt to The Ship, you would be correct, and it is that addicting at times. As long as Ubisoft follows through on their DRM promises, Assassins Creed Brotherhood should be an enjoyable experience on PC this time around. Look for Assassins Creed Brotherhood on February 22nd, 2011.

And there you have it the top PC titles that you will find in February. Make sure to head back here next month for another installment of the top titles for your PC. Until then, keep on gaming.

First off, apologies over the lack of Ones to Watch articles regarding the Xbox 360. It has been a hectic time with work schedules and personal stuff, but with the month of February, we are ready to burst back on the scene with a load of titles that will be worth your gaming dollar. We have shooters, driving, fighting and even trivia this month, so sit back, relax and check out what is on tap for February 2011 on the Xbox 360.

As for this month’s case mod, we have an Xbox 360 that has been removed from its case and all of its guts put back into a clear plexiglass case. To read more about it, head over to TechE Blog for more info.

I also want to remind everyone to check out the other Ones to Watch articles for the PC, Wii/DS and PS3/PSP and if you enjoy them, make sure to let your friends know about them.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 (Atari/Eden Games) – The first Test Drive Unlimited came out near the launch of the Xbox 360 and gained a serious foothold with gamers. It revitalized a franchise that had been on life support for several years before Unlimited’s release, and capitalized on the idea of living the life of a bigshot in an exotic location. Test Drive Unlimited 2 looks to keep the same feel from the first title, but has added a second location of Ibiza, while adding a host of new activities and social items for people to invest in. Oh, did we mention the fact that the game features a revamped driving engine that uses individual physics models for each vehicle in the game, including modeling for all the different weather types that you might find while cruising about on Oahu or Ibiza? My only concern comes from the fact that the development team is making a lot of promises, and sometimes, it can be hard to meet all of those demands. Look for Test Drive Unlimited 2 on February 8th, 2011.

You Don’t Know Jack (THQ/Jellyvision) – I remember the first time I encountered You Don’t Know Jack back in 1996. It took the stagnant trivia game format on a PC and added attitude and style to create an addictive gameplay experience. However, the franchise was drilled into the ground by Sierra at the time, and by the end, it was a shell of its former self. THQ decided to pick up the pieces from that franchise, and has relaunched it with a new breed of gamer on the scene. You Don’t Know Jack keeps up the humor and double entendres, but now offers features like online play, which is sorely needed in a trivia game where you do not have a lot of options if you lack anyone at home to play. It will be interesting to see how THQ plans to keep the game’s question content fresh, as the main downside to any trivia game is the fact that a disc can only have a finite amount of questions. No word on whether expansion packs will be available to alieviate this problem, but it the series bounces back, it should be a no-brainer. Look for You Don’t Know Jack on February 8th, 2011.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds (Capcom) – It seems that smart minds at both Capcom and Marvel realized that legal issues should not hold up a great fighting franchise that gamers have wanted to return for some time. Marvel and Capcom formed a truce of some kind and tested the popularity of the franchise with a relaunch of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on XBLA and PSN. The response was overwhelmingly positive and the announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was not far behind. This time around, it seems like both companies are pulling out the stops, adding all kinds of new characters, old favorites and more. Hulk, Ryu, Frank West, Wesker, Sentinels, Iron Man, MODOK and more are sure to grab all sorts of people in and keep them playing with competitive online play as well as a competent single player experience. It also helps that the game is hitting shelves when there is little in the way of competition from another fighting brand, so it should do well on retail shelves. Look for Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds on February 15th, 2011.

Bulletstorm (Epic Games/Electronic Arts) – It was funny that up until the demo hit XBLA and PSN, I had no real interest in this title. I mean, I enjoyed the burgers that they handed out at E3, but the game was never really capturing any of my interests. Then I actually played the demo and my mind was completely changed. The action was frantic, and the combo system for points had me always trying new things to build up bigger and better combo scores. It also helped that at the end of the demo, it showed my progress against my friends, which immediately had me replaying the level to do better. It also had an interesting sense of humor surrounding its killing system that had me chuckling from time to time. It could be a problem for those that do not like the combo system, because if you don’t like that, or want to use it, the game could end up playing like a generic first person shooter. Personally, I really enjoyed what I played so far, and I want to see the other ways I can create mayhem with this title. Look for Bulletstom on February 22nd, 2011.

deBlob 2 (THQ) – Oh deBlob, how you scorned me the first time around. I was enthralled by your initial appearance at E3 so many years ago, but when it came down to the final retail product, controls and a horrendous save system kept me from ever wanting to play your game. With those criticisms in mind, the development team went back to the drawing board and worked on the items that people had complaints about. It also helps that this time around, they are releasing on multiple platforms, rather than putting all their eggs in one basket. I am curious to see how the Wii controls will translate to the Xbox 360 controller. Motion control was not a huge part of the game, but it was present enough to make it curious how it will migrate to the Xbox 360 experience. It also does not help that I was one of the many that wanted the first title to be great, and it was a huge letdown. THQ has to hit this one out of the park to make it great, but I am happy with what has been shown so far, so I have stayed optimistic. Look for deBlob 2 on February 22nd, 2011.

And with that we have come to a close for another month of Ones to Watch on the Xbox 360. Sure there were a few others that just missed the cut like the Dreamcast Collection, which was a toss up for me. I wanted to put it, but the fact that half of the collection has already been released on XBLA had me take it off the list. Make sure to come back next month to read about what should be hot on the Xbox 360.

When it launched early in 2010, Champions Online was a decent success, but never seemed to grab the amount of players that I think Cryptic Studios and Atari were looking for at the time. It had a great character creator and seemed to capture the look and feel of a comic book, but it never seemed to grab a solid player base. Move forward to November of 2010 when Cryptic announced that Champions Online would go free to play and interest started to pick up quite a bit.

Well, starting today, the free to play version of Champions Online is up and running and it offers most of the gameplay found in the boxed copy completely free. For those that have been paying the monthly fee, you can continue to do so and get a ton of extra content for free as a Gold member, or you can switch to the free to play model. Also, anyone that joins as a free member can buy additional content at the C-Store, or bump up to the Gold Level membership at any time to get all that extra content.

I plan to go back into the world of Champions Online to give it a second look now that it is free and see what you get for that low price of free and see whether it is worth your time to head back into this MMORPG. I will say that it is going free to play at the right time, as DC Universe Online has just hit the PC market, but is charging a $15 monthly fee. With the right content, it could be a great contender for those looking for something that does not require a monthly investment.

Check the jump for a few more screens as well as a trailer for the new free to play model. Champions Online is from Cryptic Studios and published by Atari.

Blockbuster Franchise Makes Digital Debut on Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360, PlayStation Network, and Windows PC Download in Spring 2011

Los Angeles, CA — December 7, 2010 — With the city quaking in fear and no help in sight, who ya gonna call? Atari, one of the world’s most recognized publishers and producers of interactive entertainment, is once again answering the call for gamers everywhere by delivering the first ever Ghostbusters digital title, Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime. In conjunction with Sony Pictures Consumer Products, Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime will be available on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®Network, and Windows PC Download at Atari.com, in Spring 2011.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime is a four player, ghost-busting adventure that will take players on a brand new paranormal experience. Players will suit up with their proton packs and assume the role of a rookie hired by the Ghostbusters to save New York City from a disaster of ghoulish proportions.

The action-packed gameplay progresses as players complete jobs as fearless rookies who explore a series of haunted environments that must be cleared of any ectoplasmic threats. The gripping adventure rages on as players encounter gigantic bosses that require a concentrated effort to defeat using a medley of highly destructive weapons including the Proton Stream, Plasma Inductor, and the Fermion Shock. Rookie Ghostbusters will face the dangers of the eerie world alone or with a ghostbusting team of friends both locally or online through the game’s multiplayer capability.
