Ones to Watch on PS3 and PSP for November 2008

    By Paul Munn | November 2, 2008

The PlayStation 3 gets just a few exclusive games this month amidst a flood of cross-platform titles, but those exclusives are all excellent titles on the system. The headliner this month is definitely going to be Resistance 2 (IGN: “Incredible” 9.5) with a strong single-player, separate 8-man co-op, and a dizzying 60-person online competitive multiplayer option. Also coming this month is something pretty rare on the PS3 these days, an RPG in the form of the Sega-published Valkyria Chronicles (IGN: “Outstanding” 9.0). Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm (IGN: “Impressive” 8.4) is another exclusive. All three of these are headed our way on November 4th, which is also Election Day in the United States.

Late-launchers on the console this month include Alone in the Dark: Inferno, which is a somewhat revised and tweaked verison of the same game that arrived on other platforms a few months ago and Age of Booty hits the PSN a month after launching on Xbox Live Arcade. Age of Booty was to get Trophies patched in after and October release but it’s not known if the delay allowed the developer to add Trophies in for this month’s debut.

The BioShock Challenge Rooms are slated to hit the PS3 on November 20th for an unknown price. I don’t believe these are headed to the Xbox 360 or PC versions of the game.

A number of other cross-platform titles this month are showing up with Trophy support.

Alone in the Dark Review (Xbox 360)

    By Joe Haygood | October 27, 2008

Alone in the Dark is suppose to be a return to glory for a game long forgotten.  It is also suppose to be a game that returns fortune to Atari’s somewhat tarnished brand.  The Alone in the Dark franchise has sat for some time now, its last outing coming in the form of a horrible movie, directed by Uwe Boll.  Atari has put a lot of work into reviving this franchise, to the point of making it a flagship release for the company.  While it delivers on providing an enjoyable, mature storyline, the game’s mechanics get in the way at every turn, giving the player more frustration than enjoyment.

Alone in the Dark starts off by setting up the mood perfectly, with you coming out of a drug induced sleep, captured by some people that want a stone medallion.  While attempting to find the stone, you friend Theophile Paddington releases the evil that is in the stone to free your character, Edward Carnby from its influence.  With that one moment, the demons of hell break out of their containment in the stone and release their fury on the human populace of Earth.  Quickly, you are delivered into the action and the chase to find out who you are and how you can stop the apocalypse that has fallen upon New York City.

Eden Games to Fix Alone in the Dark on the 360

    By Joe Haygood | August 21, 2008

Eden Games is showing off the PS3 version of Alone in the Dark at the Leipzig Games Convention, but the issues with the game on other platforms came up for discussion.  Eden did address the issues that people have had with control schemes, driving, camera angles and pretty much everything else in the game.

Eden Games said that they are currently working on a patch, but they only seemed to mention the 360 version of the game, leaving those that are stuck with a Wii or PC version out in a lurch.  I do not know if the Wii supports download patching, but I do know that the PC does, yet it is conspicuosly absent in this discussion.

No word on a timeframe for the patch, or what it will fix (everything needs to be fixed), but at least they are working on something for one of the platforms.  Eurogamer did seem to have some good word on the PS3 version, since its released was delayed behind the other platforms.  Maybe some extra time in the oven helped the game development.

    Aeropodcast #45: Fourhman’s Ode to the 70’s

    By Joe Haygood | August 18, 2008

Stephen, Joe and Fourhman are together again for a festivus of games, news and even some 70’s goodness.

Our focus this week is on developers getting a bit sensitive, or maybe reviewers being a little to cynical when it comes to their games, and the criticism they may receive.  Our targets for the segment are Denis Dyack invading NeoGAF, Jonathan Blow and his defense over the pricing of Braid, and last is Luc Bernard and his vocal opposition to Destructoid’s review of Eternity’s Child.  Is this a trend for developers to get into the fray and defend their product, or maybe reviewers are becoming more jaded as more shovelware is tossed upon them, looking to be reviewed.  We also ask everyone to visit the show notes and check out the ultimate in developer/press battles, which was Derek Smart vs everyone in defense of Battlecruiser 3000AD.

We also got another great review on iTunes from Pax Rabbit, brought up some great reviews from the site, scathing commentary from the readers, and a nice helping of gaming news.  So get out there and listen already, Dumbass.

Thanks as always to Mixmaster Stephen and his wheels of steel for mixing the podcast this week, and to Revolution Void for our bumper music.  You can find them at www.revolutionvoid.com.

Alone in the Dark, Wall-E Demos Hit the Live Marketplace

    By Joe Haygood | August 4, 2008

Today, two new demos have hit the Xbox Marketplace, Alone in the Dark and Wall-E.

Alone in the Dark is a relaunch of the famed adventure/horror series, having you play as Edward Carnby, and moving about realistic fire.  There is probably more, but it is hard to find justification to own this game.  At least now there is a demo, to try it and see the horror first hand.

Wall-E offers players of all ages, a game loosely based on the movie of the same name, with puzzle solving and racing as well.  The game from some accounts is rather difficult, which is surprising for a game aimed at children.

Yeah it is a tough week for demos, but it is better to try these now, rather then spend $60 of your hard earned money on them, only to find out they stink.

Aeropodcast #37: We Are So Suing You

    By Joe Haygood | June 24, 2008

Hello, howdy and aloha. We are back for another week of broadcasting some gaming goodness, while wondering when the Atari notice of lawsuit is coming for Joe Fourhman.

Some of the items hit on this week are how we as reviewers and writers can sometimes feel pressure from a PR firm to get a review out, or with a particular score, whether the pressure is indirect or bluntly direct. Also we have some news on penis monsters in the Spore creator, the ESRB helping game developers hide games before they are announced, and more Star Wars games. But these include using the Wiimote as a lightsaber, which is what the kid in us have always been looking to play since we were little kids.

It’s release day for Alone in the Dark and whether you let reviews influence your purchasing decision or not, it’s a title that certainly looks and plays mighty promising. We’ve got a short yellow bus full of new Alone in the Dark trailers for your viewing eyes to keep the fire burning. First is an action packed taxi ride and a coinciding trailer for the Wii version showing of all the key interactive capabilities, a trailer for the Monsters you’ll encounter and a trailer for those poor Zombies dudes.

Aeromatic: You’re Alone in the Dark

    By Shane | June 22, 2008

Atari’s Alone in the Dark didn’t get the review love it was hoping for this week, although the game is not officially released until this Tuesday, 24th. A few game sites somehow magically received a copy of the title from Mr. Torrent, jumped the gun and reviewed without even playing the game, really, in order to be the first to publish their thrashings.

In the Podcast, we took a look at EVE Online which celebrated its 5th birthday recently. We decided to take a closer look at this MMO that has slowly grown to be one of the bigger MMORPG games on the market behind World of Warcraft.

We also reviewed Spore Creatures, Grid on the PC and the Bourne Conspiracy on the PS3.

Here’s what else happened this week:
Some observations of the Sony platforms from a long-time Nintendo fan
Guitar Hero World Tour Supports GHIII DLC
    The Video Game Cake
Spider Man Web of Shadows Combat System Video
Meet Preston Marlow’s Brother, Niko Bellic
Call of Duty: World at War Premiere Trailer
Review of Race Driver GRID for PC
Oft-proposed Wii lightsaber duel game to be a reality
    Review: The Bourne Conspiracy (PS3)
