A new PlayStation Blog post from the President and Executive Producer on PixelJunk Eden notes that the short development cycles of the PSN game allowed them to integrate a couple of very recent PS3 OS features. We already knew it would have PSP remote play support, which is nice, and we knew it would have trophies. What we didn’t know is that it will be the first PS3 game to debut with video recording and direct upload to YouTube support.

“The YouTube upload feature is going to revolutionize how people share tips. Up until now it has been limited to people with video capture equipment, but from now on, anyone can record their game and upload it directly to YouTube from within the game! It is as simple as pushing one button to start and one button to stop and upload, and there is no affect on the gameplay thanks to the power of the PS3 and its abundance of SPU processors.”

What better way to show off how to get the hardest trophies than to record yourself doing it. While other developers are working to catch up with trophy support, Q Games has done them one better with their new release adding both that and YouTube support.

The demo for PixelJunk Eden will be on the store this Thursday the 24th while the final game is expected the following week on the store.

On a side note the post does mention that PixelJunk Monsters, their most popular title to date, may get trophy and custom soundtrack support patched in along with “other features” but that depends on whether gamers reach out the producer on that game and make some noise.

Seen on the PS Blog

It seems there are rumors starting rumors these days. According to allaboutiphone.net, Bungie has given all its employees iPhones. Any normal person would think that this means Bungie is trying to keep employees connected and up to date with the latest technology, but if you are a gamer then you obviously think that this means iHalo is coming in the near future. There has been no confirmation that Bungie has given its staff iPhones, but since they are no longer under complete control by Microsoft it would let then pursue another platform, and I don’t think Microsoft would mind. Getting more exposure for their hallmark franchise can never be a bad thing. Since I own an iPhone I would definitely be interested in a Halo game for the Jesus phone. The big question is whether or not it will be a FPS, which could be tough with no buttons, or if they have something completely different planned. On the other hand these rumors could be complete BS….let’s all hope their not!

So after many, many, many months of speculation and rumor, the cat was finally let out of the bag that Bioware was indeed working on a Knights of the Old Republic MMO. Details had been all over the place about it but the announcment still does not give us anything concrete about the game itself, beyond the fact that the game is coming, and that it will most likely come to the PC and possibly the 360 and PS3.

First off, I love the Knights of the Old Republic games, feeling that they are the best Star Wars stories to come out in many years. Solid gameplay mechanics and lots of jedi just add to the already great story. So how will all of this translate to an MMO, when the story may take more of a backseat to level grinding? No one really knows at this point. So while I had tons of enthusiasm for the project when we recorded our podcast this weekend, I have now started to worry a bit about how one of my favorite franchises could be hurt by an MMO.

Bioware has made the action/RPG genre their own at this point, knowing how to combine story with the gameplay elements into a fine gaming experience. From Baldur’s Gate all the way up to Mass Effect, Bioware has proven they have the chops to make great games, but an MMO is a whole different affair. Look at a game like The Matrix Online, which could not have a better setup, as the whole idea of logging into a virtual world to play a game, fits perfectly into the actual Matrix storyline. But when no one can be Neo, it starts to lose something in the translation. Even the first Star Wars MMO, Star Wars Galaxies, had lots of hype, but as people started to play, they realized that it was not really Star Wars. I can agree with this from first hand experience in both games, as the idea on paper never met the expectation that was in my brain.

One thing that could be successful for the KOTOR MMO is setting. Their are two periods that could add a lot to the game while fleshing out the Old Republic timeframe of the Star Wars universe. The first would be focusing on the fall of Darth Revan. This would give gamers an insight as to how a great Sith Lord could fall from power to the point of being captured. I for one have always been curious as to whether Revan’s fall was due to Malak’s intervention, or a way for Revan to escape the Dark side, as you never feel all that attached to it while you play the first KOTOR. Another good scenario could show how the protagonist from the second KOTOR falling from the Force. Some may disagree with this idea, but to be honest, Obsidian did not build a great story for the follow up, and that the story of the Exile seemed forced and contrived at times. Fleshing out her backstory could make for a more compelling character, because as it stands, she seems to be more powerful than your character from the first KOTOR. There could be other scenarios that might play out, but in my mind, these two points in time seem ripe with opportunity to expand the universe.

No one wants Bioware to fail in this endeavor, and fans around the world probably share my opinion, that the only people that can make a Star Wars themed MMO good, would be Bioware. Their storytelling and gameplay with Knights of the Old Republic have shown the work they can do when they get the time to craft a well tuned game. All eyes are on Bioware, and now the pressure begins.

It’s all part of Microsoft’s “Bringing Comic-Con Home” event, a behind-the-scenes look. The horror comedy film concept is the works of filmmaker James Gunn (“Slither,” “Dawn of the Dead”) and producer Peter Safran (“Scary Movie,” “Meet the Spartans,” “Disaster Movie”) who will bring some of the best horror directors to life on Xbox Live.

Here are some of the directors:

James Wan (“Saw,” “Death Sentence”), David Slade (“30 Days of Night,” “Hard Candy”), James Gunn, Lucky McKee (“May,” “The Woods”), Andrew Douglas (“The Amityville Horror”) and Marcus Nispel (“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “Friday the 13th”).

Peter Safran:

“We’re excited to launch the Xbox original content with these world-class directors, who are all tremendously talented and at the cutting edge of their craft,” Safran said. “Their youthful and innovative approach is the perfect combination for this unique digital venture with Xbox 360, and we expect to see some very creative, horrifying and hilarious shorts as these masters of horror present their comedic vision. We can’t wait to give fans at Comic-Con a taste of what’s to come.”

This is a great news as I love horror flicks, and we should see some pretty creative films from these talented directors. The idea reminds me of when BMW, I think it was, allowed film directors to produce web shorts on anything they wanted a few years back, as long as it had their branding in it.

Keep clicking for the list of films arriving.

• “Doggie Heaven (Woof!)” — The creative team behind the smash hit “Saw” films, James Wan (“Saw,” “Death Sentence”) and Leigh Whannell, tell the story of a young man who is having a dog of a day. He’s just been shot dead, but his real problems are only just beginning because of a clerical error that has sent him to the wrong heaven.

• “Humanzee!” — James Gunn (“Slither,” “Dawn of the Dead”) directs and stars in a sitcom about his human-chimp hybrid son, the Humanzee (played by Gunn’s brother, Sean Gunn, from “Gilmore Girls”). It’s a delightful mix of “South Park,” “Wonder Showzen” and “Small Wonder.”

• “MEATDOG: What’s Fer’ Dinner” — Director David Slade (“30 Days of Night,” “Hard Candy”) presents MEATDOG, an animated mutt made up of cold cuts. MEATDOG is pitted against a church of evil occult pigs while being pursued by a carnivorous rabbit and a slobbering hound. It’s dogicide when everyone wants MEATDOG on their menu.

• “Blue Like You” —From director Lucky McKee (“May,” “The Woods”), “Blue Like You” follows the antics of old friends Patrick and Cyndy as they get to know their mysterious and extraordinary new friend Blue, a beautiful young woman who doesn’t seem to understand how the simplest of things work.

• “The Miracle of Phil” — From director Andrew Douglas (“The Amityville Horror”), “The Miracle of Phil” shows that the best relationships are full of screaming, shouting and cursing, but when Phil gets knocked up, Chris is the one who feels screwed.

• “Adrenaline Slam” — Director Marcus Nispel (“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “Friday the 13th”) brings “ADRENALINE SLAM,” a high-octane hybrid of hidden camera reality and Hollywood fantasy that exposes ordinary people to extraordinary events.

In addition, Microsoft has sought pilots from emerging online talent John Clisham:

• “Assorted Nightmares: The Janitor” — From online director John Clisham and starring Jenna Dewan (“Step Up”), somewhere in the darkness just beyond “Tales From the Crypt” and a little south of “The Twilight Zone,” is “Assorted Nightmares,” a modern-day horror anthology show. The first episode pays homage to the 1980s horror-slasher genre, as things at school for Jennifer don’t turn out as expected.

Nintendo’s E3 conference was slightly less painful than having my hand skewered by a power drill, much like in that Bioshock trailer. But, I digress… the real crime, according to Iwata, was ignoring the hardcore gaming market.

Iwata told Forbes.com, “If there is any perception that Nintendo is ignoring the core gamers, it’s a misunderstanding and we really want to get rid of that misunderstanding by any means. We are sorry about [the E3] media briefings, specifically for those who were expecting to see Nintendo show something about ‘Super Mario’ or ‘Legend of Zelda.’”

Could Iwata miss the point any more than he already has? The reason we (core gamers) have this “misunderstanding” is that Nintendo has done very little for us. They gave us a ton of lip service at last year’s E3, but have done little to nothing since then. They haven’t done anything to court 3rd-party developer hits, like what Microsoft has done with Square Enix. Nintendo has done a great job with the DS. Some of the most unaplogetically hardcore titles in handheld gaming are found on the DS, but almost all of these are not Mario or Zelda games. Apologizing for not showing off Mario or Zelda is like running someone over and then saying sorry because you didn’t use your blinker.

Anyway, not everything Nintendo has done lately has been pure garbage. There are getting to be some totally sweet WiiWare titles, and there are a number of gamers that are super excited for Animal Crossing: City Folk (even if I’m not one of them).

Oh, and while we’re giving out free advice… Nintendo, PLEASE refrain from having your execs participate in on-stage banter while demonstrating games. I hadn’t seen this much buffoonery since the E3 ‘06 Sony briefing. Ugh.

The US is still finding it difficult to find one but the shortages haven’t prevented the Wii from becoming the top console seller in the world at 10.9 million sold to date with 2.4 million produced this year. Most people I talk to say it hasn’t been that hard to find one - but maybe it’s a marketing technique Nintendo is using. Did you wait anxiously for your Wii?

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s global president and CEO:

“We are really intending to increase the shipments to the U.S., especially compared to last year,” “However, I can’t give you a 100% commitment [that you'll be able to find a Wii this holiday season]. What I can commit myself to is that Nintendo is going to do its best to supply as many Wii hardware units as possible in order to meet demand there.”
