Upstairs I've got my 360 hooked up to an ordinary SDTV (lame), but my PS3 on the other hand is paired up with a 30-something inch, 720p, LCD TV (not the greatest, but I make do with what I have). However, like most of you already know, the PS3 only comes with composite cables. That said, I was wondering if any old HDMI cable that I buy off of Amazon would work and if there is anything worse about the cheaper cables like this:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002L5R78/ref=s9_subs_c2_s1_p23_t1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1KB22V73BMRCKV94E8A1&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=463383371&pf_rd_i=507846

as compared to more expensive cables *ahem* like this:

  2. Yes there's a difference: PRICE, and small bit of quality.

HDMI is a purely digital communication medium. It's a 1 or a 0. It either works or it doesn't. There have been many tests by Gizmodo on the different cables and the result was this:

Unless you're going an EXTREMELY LONG distance, the cable makes no difference.

EXTREMELY LONG being something on the order of ten's of feet. IIRC, I think they were testing 30ft or 60ft cables, and what they found was that the most expensive cables were better, but marginally and still not really worth the extra cost.

If you're going to buy a HDMI cable just get the 'cheap' one. Personally, I recommend Monoprice, and they even have pretty colored ones if you're so inclined:

  3. Yeah, I have never found cable cost = greater quality when it comes to digital. Its not like the cheaper cables are going to reverse the bytes of data on you. For some the name is important, and here's to them helping the economy. As for me, I bought some optical sound cables (TOSLink) a few years ago, and went with the house brand at Best Buy. They sound great, and have lasted longer than the Monster TOSLink cable I bought a little before that.
