I talked about this some on Twitter, but the 140 character limitation really held me back. Here, however, we can all share our thoughts and vent on what we think are some of video games most overrated franchises. The three titles I've chosen are basically mascots of Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony.

Halo: I'll start with the Microsoft franchise so that Fourhman and the other Aeropause Nintendudes won't chastise me for my other picks. The first Halo was the foundation of Microsoft's success in the video game market. At the time, it was completely revolutionary for the consoles. With Halo's success came sequels, and an awesome online multiplayer structure (that would soon turn into a community of homophobic, foul-mouthed, pre-pubescent boys). After Halo 2, I was completely burnt out on Halo, although I knew another one was already in development. At first, it seems so cool to spray bullets in all directions, but once I realized that that's basically the set-up for every level, I was ready to snap my disk in half. After two levels, not to mention TWO WHOLE GAMES, there's no more fun to be had. It's all the same. Kill aliens. Walk straight. Kill more aliens. I'm so sick of space marines! Why the hell do people keep buying these games? I can't believe two more are coming out in 2009 and 2010... Ugh!

Metal Gear Solid: I'm the kind of guy who loves stealth games, but there is nothing about this franchise that makes me want to keep playing. The gameplay is halfway decent, it has really solid graphics and presentation values, but the story completely kills all potential the game has. Seriously, I wouldn't mind watching hours of cut scenes if I actually knew what the hell was going on. This has got to be the most convoluted story in video game history. Too much is going on at once, and by the end of a cut scene you won't remember a thing. Seriously, why is there a knife-slinging immortal, cybernetic ninja, mind-controlling arm, mooing mobile turrets, and a hacking-cough old guy for a protagonist. Sometimes, I think Kojima watches me and laughs while I stare blankly at my TV screen. W. T. F.

Zelda: What is the key to Nintendo's success? Take a game that was released over 20 years ago, improve the graphics, and release it to the public. I don't know what to say about this franchise. All of the games are EXACTLY the same; like worse than Halo. How many different Links are there that need to save a princess named Zelda? Then, Nintendo's idea of diversifying one of the games is make it look more cartoony. Good job, Mr. Miyamoto, you fooled us! It's like they don't even care about improving the series anymore. "Alright... There should be a boy, let's name him Link, and he needs to do something... I KNOW! Let's have him save a princess, that's never been done before, right?" There is nothing to love from these games. Show Nintendo they need to change up the formula at least a little. Even Miyamoto said the next Zelda wouldn't be a change. Stop buying them!

Phew! *wipes sweat* So, that's where I stand. I want to here everyone else rant and rave!

  2. Can you say Zelda. Because if there is a franchise that put me to sleep, its Zelda. At least the one entry that I tried. All i wanted was to get my green Link leotard, and ride off into battle wtih my horse, Ebola. But no, that wasn't going to happen. Instead, I am chatting with Cletus and his city of helpless fools, that want me to get some fish, and scare off a cat and other mundane tasks before I can do anything.

Another one that I never could understand the furor over was Final Fantasy. I don't think any of them are linked, and they just tell the story of one androgynous male, who looks to take down the man.

I believe you're referring to the beginning of Twilight Princess, and my God was it horrible. Who wants to go fishing, chase a cat, and recover a baby crib? Soooo boring.

As for Final Fantasy, I've only played one of the games: Final Fantasy X. It was pretty fun, but I wasn't really sure what was going on. I've always wanted to get into that series, but I never did. I'll probably check out Final Fantasy XIII, though.

One of the great things about in-game money and virtual economies is that they never went through this whole economic meltdown. So take that to all of those people who think the real world is better then computer games!
