Is Gears 2 Really Worth the Hype

  1. I was cruising the web, and reading all the gushing praise of Gears of War 2, and it just has me wondering if the game is really worth the praise, or if it is blind expectations that get people excited for the game.

My assumption is that journalists and reviewers are impartial and are not influenced by the name recognition of a game, but games like this seem to be allowed some leeway when it comes to mistakes that another title might not be able to overcome.

A good example would be if Gears 2 suddenly shifted to using an Alone in the Dark like inventory system. Would it be heckled like Alone in the Dark was, or would it get a pass, all in the name of Gears 2.

I doubt the game could really be bad considering how good the first game was. The game's major fans are going to love it, whereas some newcomers might be overwhelmed. I honestly believe that the game will deliver in all ways.

Have you played Kill.Switch? I think that's one of the first, if not the first, game to implement a cover system. Cliff Bleszenski stated it as one of the games that influenced him with Gears of War. That game's cover system worked pretty nicely, despite being early. It's sitting up in my room right now; I like to pop it in my PS2 from time to time.

Yes I have heard of that game but Gears has improved over that system exponentially.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. The way that Gears of War has so many functions mapped to the 'A' button makes the cover system a tad faulty. With Kill.Switch there is one button for taking cover, and it works smoothly. I would say the game's biggest flaw concerning the cover system is attaching to round structures. The character will still adhere to the structure, although it's no where near suitable for cover.

Even if your saying the cover system in Gears isn't as good as that other game then why does Gears of War have critical acclaim and Kill Switch does not?

That's a very simple question to answer. Gears of War is definitely the better game; there's no contest. When it comes to story, gameplay, and graphics, Kill.Switch pales in comparison.

Ok then, why are you arguing if you think Gears is a better game?

I never tried to argue anything. Overall, Gears of War is definitely the better game, but Kill.Switch's cover system was much more functional. Gears of War 2 might change that aspect, though. In the end, it's still an opinionated subject.

Oh. My. God. I was sitting here at the computer when all of a sudden I hear something on my local news station that piques my interest. There was a brief segment on Gears of War 2, so I quickly ran into the den to see what they'd say. Surprisingly, there was nothing mentioned about violence; it seemed more promotional than anything. It even showed Mike Capps, since Epic Games is located in Cary, NC. On to my main point, they showed some gameplay that I'd seen before, but I was stunned by the graphics. I play my 360 games on an old boob-tube TV in my room. Today, I saw what the game looks like on a 50", 720p, Plasma screen. I don't know how I used to live!
