A few days ago, I sent a message to beloved Aeropause staff member Joseph Haygood over Xbox Live. Since we both love the game Mass Effect, and have both been playing a ton of it recently, I asked him if we should race to see who could get all the achievement points in Mass Effect first. His replied boldly, saying "sure." Even though he most likely does not care and was just trying to get rid of me, I will not back down. Trust me folks, I know who I'm up against. This is Joe "Monsters vs. Aliens" Haygood. He is one of the biggest achievement whores I know and he's currently ahead of me in achievement points for Mass Effect. Joe has 38/46 achievements with a score of 875, compared to my lowly 31/46 with a score of 735. I know you're all counting me out, but wait, if you call right now I'll throw in the reason I might still have a chance in this race for FREE. Two of the achievements are for beating the game on the Hardcore and Insanity difficulty modes. You have to beat Hardcore to unlock Insanity. I'm almost done with my play through on Insanity mode. Joe is still working on his Hardcore play through. May the biggest Mass Effect nerd win!

PS: Fourhman, Stephen, and all the other Microsoft haters, feel free to insult us on our love of Mass Effect.

That's a good idea. Go Jordan! I think you misnamed Joe, though. I'm pretty sure it's Joe "Cars" Haygood. Good luck to the both of you.

UPDATE: Joe still has 38/46 achievements, but I scored three more today, bringing me up to 34/46.

The score is now Joe: 875 to Jordan: 825

I have to do one more dedicated play through, download the DLC, and fool around and I will quickly shoot up to 1050/1050.

    Here's a nice screen grab:

  4. Just to give a counter update, I am currently working through on getting the hardcore achievement with my level 58 Soldier, as well as playing through with an Adept to get my pesky Singularity achievement. I also have a Vanguard that I am playing through to get the AI Hacking achievement as well as the Dampening achievement and I am using Kaiden and Garus to get my last two party member achievements. With all of those juggling at once, I should be ready to get my insane playthrough started by the end of the week.

UPDATE: Joe is still in the lead with 38/46 achievements, but I have earned two more, putting me at 36/46.

The score is now Joe: 875 to Jordan: 855

Joe is still working on his Hardcore run, but he is attempting to earn achievements in bulk on this playthrough. He can knock out at least four more achievements on this run alone, but he still has to go back and play on Insanity.

Tomorrow I plan on earning the DLC achievement (which I downloaded today) and a couple more ability achievements. I'm going to try to blast through more side missions as well so I can speed up the process on my ally achievements (working on my last two, but so is Joe). Once I get that done I won't have anymore real playing to do.

This competition is much closer than I thought it would be. Both of us have different obstacles that keep us just out of the 1050/1050 mark.

  6. My biggest issue is having people wanting to play other things once I get home. Like last night, I was going to blast through Noveria and Feros in my hardcore playthrough, but that did not happen, because Terry wanted to play Saints Row 2 in co-op mode.

Also, Mr. Snyder is gaining fast and furious, by having the summer off. But I will persevere as well as I can, because complaining only makes me sound like Lindsey Lohan, and I know I do not want to be compared to the almighty "Firecrotch".

Fair enough with the summer vacation argument. You have to learn to blow off your friends, though. I've denied many a request to play GTA IV.

    UPDATE: Jordan wins!!!

After a dedicated day of side quests and ability spamming, I have reached the 1050/1050 mark, and Joe has... "capitulate[d]." I gained 15 achievements in 3 days and Joe has gained... none. I am also very proud (I guess that's the best word for it) to say that this is the first game I've gotten ALL the achievements in. I feel as if a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

  9. congrats to Snyder. In this contest he was the greater man. I was telling him that I was getting burned out on the game shortly after starting three playthroughs at the same time. If only I had a summer break to work on this contest :p

Yeah, I'm definitely going to take a break from Mass Effect now so I can get psyched for Mass Effect 2 (or more DLC).

  11. Yeah, I could use that DLC announcement soon. But for now, it is Point Lookout in Fallout 3, Pure and some more Co-Op Saints Row 2 on the 360.

THIS NEWS JUST IN! The Mass Effect achievement list has been updated with three new achievements for 50 points each. Is that a hint at new DLC or what? I might not be able to pick it up right away, so Haygood, this is your chance to take the lead. :P

  14. Yeah, but I was not impressed by the achievement list. It almost looks like it has to do with a training station.

    So I still win? Deal.

  16. Just picked up the DLC today. And after I made fun of all those people buying stuff, I have to admit I might get sucked into buying a Mass Effect shirt for my avatar.

I have my eye on that N7 armor, but I'm definitely not going to buy it. I'm glad they totally released that DLC pack without giving us any news of it (except for the achievement update). It sounds pretty shallow but at least its only 400 funny money.

  18. Yep my Loonies are already spent. I will be going through some of the add-on content tonight with my level 60 soldier. Then I will go with my Level 60 Vanguard on insane and hammer out both of those achievements.

    Posted 2 months ago #

  19. Well, I played about an hour of the content and I am sorta meh on it. I like the early scenarios, and you can get one of the 50 point achievements after playing one match if you are efficient.

But the idea of going to a space station is rather underwhelming. I mean, there is only a few rooms and the simulator and that is about it. You can come and go from the station, but I think the challenge is getting first in all of the scenario leaderboards.

I would say get it if you are a fan, but don't expect much.

Yeah, I could tell from the achievement list that it wasn't going to be a compelling add-on, but I suppose that's why BioWare never mentioned it. I'll have to download it eventually to reclaim my perfect score, but not right now.
