  2. I'm sure Joseph will respond soon with some advice. I would definitely not buy a motherboard with onboard video if you want to game a lot. But it looks like you have a video card picked out there too. Man PC's have really come down in price.

  4. Sorry I was late to the party. First off, you do not want any onboard video. If a board has it, you want to make sure it also has a 16x PCI-e slot, preferably a version 2.0 slot.

For $700, you can build a decent rig. You might have to use some of the parts from your old computer, like if you already have an LCD or a keybard and mouse. CPU, Motherboard, RAM and Video card need to be your focus.

Are you looking to build a PC rig or put it together yourself. Just need to know what you want to do. Give me and idea of some of the games you are looking to play and whic way you want to approach it, and I think we can hammer out the specs for a great gaming PC. Welcome into the PC gaming fold. We will assimilate all soon enough.

  6. Sorry for my delay. It has been hectic with work and then editing video all evening, plus train lag. Okay, you will need a case. I would go with an Antec case that has a power supply already in it, preferably a 500 watt or larger. As for a motherboard, processor, RAM combo, I would go wtih the following choices:
    Gigabyte Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128337
    Intel Quad Core Q6600 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017
    OCZ Solid 2GB of DDR2 1066 RAM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227239

These are all just starting points. Look around the web and I am sure you can find cheaper. I would also look at the Geforce 8 series of cards. They are super cheap and are still running games quite nicely. My setup is similar, and I can run Crysis on High with 30+ frames per second. If you have any other questions, feel free to email tips@aeropause.com or post in here. I will be less busy in a few days.

  8. Unless you are looking to overclock, I would say the stock CPU fan is fine. It is rather beefy and just seems to cool the hell out of my CPU just fine. If you are overclocking, I think I recommended a fan to Eric Kranz, the Arctic Cooler 7. I may be screwing up the name, but if you listen to Podcast 25-28, there is mention of the CPU fan in question in there.

Also, just a heads up, I have the non-energy compliant version of that Gigabyte board, and I love it. But I had to fix the memory speed manually in the BIOS. My memory would not read as 1066, but as 800. Just something to watch out for.

sorry about the double post but i couldn't find a edit button ok so it starts up now and it get to a black screen that at the bottom says veryfying dmi data pool and stops there it went to start the windows install process once. so i was thinking if i installed a small 3 gig linuix partion first that it would work then i could install windows.

  13. It could have to do with not enough juice going to the mobo. I had that happen to me, and it ended up being a bad power supply was not supplying the juice that the system wanted.

  14. Here is a page that can help troubleshoot the error.

  16. I am happy to hear that it is all working great. It takes some time tinkering with it all, but once it is up and running, the games you play will look amazing. I cannot wait for upcoming PC titles like Dawn of War II, Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3 and a little title known as Grand Theft Auto IV.
