In my opinion, the best female vocalist would have to be Annie Lennox. I love her range and dynamic. Plus she can belt it out with the best of them no matter what the genre. Listen to "Sweet Dreams", or "Missionary Man" and you get some solid vocals, but switch it up with "There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)" which goes all over the scales from low to super high.
As for male vocalist, I have to go with Freddie Mercury. I have never heard another male vocalist that could pull off so many pitch changes in a song. Whether it was something like "We Will Rock You" or changing it up with "We Are the Champions" it was always great. If you want a haunting performance, listen to one of the last songs he recorded, "The Show Must Go On". Lots of foreshadowing.
