It was not even for achievements. I just thought it would be a fun game to play as I enjoyed both movies. However, the game was less than stellar, at the point where I planned my next root canal while playing, because I needed to do something that involved less pain.

This game was horrible. I really did try to give the game a chance, but it was a miserable gaming experience. Repetitive gameplay, and what seemed to be broken controls killed any sense of fun with the Hellboy license. I had no idea that Konami was behind this abomination, but they should pay me money for trying to play this game.

Stephen Munn on "Judgment to feature open fighting, "like Power Stone""

IGN's Mark Bozon claims IGN will be sitting down to chat with series mastermind Koji Igarashi at the E3 event this week to talk Castlevania Judgment. In advance of that, IGN sent a list of questions to be translated for the man. Due to some pretty strict limits on what he could say, there's not a whole lot in the interview worth mentioning, save for the confirmation that fighting in the game will not be face-to-face in a SoulCalibur sense, but rather open and free, more like Power Stone.

I've hear of Power Stone, but I haven't played it. The idea here is that instead of being locked to your opponent, you're both roaming free in an area and you beat each other up. The appeal of this to me is that the fights will play out more like a Castlevania boss battle than a traditional fighter might. I'll ignore the wrenching in my gut, because it's entirely from the fact that I'm stuck in Curse of Darkness right now, unable to progress past either of the two bosses I can currently access.

The other interesting thing in the interview is that Iga seems to think it's not generally known that players will be able to unlock Shanoa, protagonist of the upcoming DS game, Order of Ecclesia, by linking those two titles together. I'm not sure why IGN thought it was Maria being unlocked there, in fact. Nintendo Power broke that in the recent reveal of the game. Don't they read Nintendo Power?!

Finally, there is mention that members of the Dewy's Adventure team at Konami are part of the Judgment team. Dewy's Adventure was one of the better looking games on Wii, though admittedly not boundary-shattering like Super Mario Galaxy. This explains a lot of the game's somewhat "glowy" current look to me.

You can get some information about how the game controlled in IGN's hands-on, right here. The game they played was reportedly very early, with lots of pre-alpha type issues. Let's hope they iron all those out for release this fall.

Konami alleges that two of their patents were violated by Harmonix and company. The first patent mentions "simulated musical devices", while the second one covers "music rhythm-based matching games". While at first glace, the lawsuit brings up memories of Gibson and their lawsuit against Activision over the guitar simulation, there is another twist to the story, that may not bode well for Activision. Engadget noticed that Activision made a note in their Gibson lawsuit, that specifically mentions the Konami patent, in relation to their instruments, make one wonder if Activision has already negotiated a settlement with Konami over this very patent.

So the swag Konami gave us for preordering Portrait of Ruin is pretty damn sweet. I got a hard Castlevania case that holds two DS cards, a Castlevania stylus, a phenomenal art book with concept art from all the Castlevania games, a mini poster that has a Castlevania timeline on one side and a Portrait of Ruin poster on the other, and a soundtrack CD, all in a black linen box with a wax seal, that is actually held shut with Velcro. The set is not without its surprises though.

The CD is called "Castlevania 20th Anniversary Premium Music Collection" and here is the track listing. Careless, stupid typos have been corrected, because Konami still hasn't learned how to localize these games or anything related to them.
36 - Beginning - the Legend of Demon Castle
37 - Bloody Tears

OK, so all in all, a lot of music, and free, so it's not fair to complain. But track 10, Battle of the Holy, is from The Castlevania Adventure, which was on the original Game Boy. And this track, like all the other music, is the original music from the game. Not an orchestral arrangement. It's effectively the original midi that was converted for the game.

Of course, all the music from Rondo on sounds fantastic, because it's the kind of stuff that was either on an optical disc or a high-capacity card, but I was somewhat disappointed that songs like "Reincarnated Soul" didn't get an orchestral arrangement. They effectively did that already, as Cordova Town from Curse of Darkness was just a re-arrangement of that song anyway. No sign of that song on here, though.

I'm officially too picky.

Stephen Munn on "Castlevania: Judgment screens look very manga"

[gallery]

Here are the first batch of actual screens from Castlevania: Judgment on Wii. It's exciting to see Dracula designed in a way so consistent with Ayami Kojima's concept art for Symphony of the Night. I also find it interesting that the characters are so clearly put together in a manga style. You're not seeing the kind of painful realism you get in the character models of SoulCalibur 4. Instead, it's almost like it's meant to look more like a painting, which could be very nice. Of course, all of that could mean nothing once I see how the game plays, and I'm telling you right now that I will buy it, because it's Castlevania. The four characters shown are Simon (who looks a bit more like Hector from Curse of Darkness than Simon Belmont), Maria Renard (the young version from Rondo of Blood), Dracula, and Alucard.

Overall, I like the designs. I really am looking forward to seeing the game in action at E3. Did I mention it's supposed to be at E3? It is.
