This month’s issue is both hearty and chunky, as NP rampages through over 20 games featured at E3 2009, several of which received almost no press coverage. By the way, has anybody out there speculated that “Metroid: Other M” might be a cloaked reference to Mother Brain? Chew on that as you read-a-long!
Issue #244, August 2009
featuring E3 2009 roundup, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (DS), No More Heroes 2 (Wii), Trauma Team (Wii), Wii Sports Resort (Wii), Legendary Starfy (Wii), Fragile (Wii)
I’m not going to bother saying much about E3 showponies like Super Mario Galaxy 2, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Metroid: Other M. You already know enough about those. Instead, I’m going to present some tidbits from the lesser-known E3 reveals.
Like Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (Wii). WTF. I moderately enjoyed the original GameCube Crystal Chronicles, but this Wii version sounds completely different. They’re still calling it an action-RPG, but every time I hear about it, it seems to be less and less RPG-like. In fact, it sounds a lot like Elebits, as the main character relies on a grab-and-yank telekinesis ability to solve puzzles and interact with the environment. NP reports that the demo had “no spells, items, or pointless NPC conversations.” Can this sub-franchise deviate any further from Final Fantasy?
If you’re looking to beat the heat this summer, there’s a couple cool titles coming out next month for Wii… along with the usual assortment of non-starters aimed at ruining kids’ summer vacation. I’ll let you decide which is which!
July 7
We’ve been covering it like mad… The Bigs 2 arrives for Wii (and every other platform) next week.
Monkey Island returns on the 7th, in the form of the latest episodic Telltale game for WiiWare. Perhaps ironically, it is not a pure point-and-click on the Wii; you use the Nunchuk to walk Guybrush around. Tales of Monkey Island is also coming to PC.
July 14
Cooking Mama has long held her minigame crown, but get ready to meet Science Papa. Seems like more of the usual minigames, just this time with a science-based palette swap. Papa is also coming to DS (same release date) and I can’t help but imagine it will be better on the portable. That tactile touchscreen is so much better for the Mama series than the floating-in-midair Wii editions.
Then there’s Sudoku Ball - Detective, which I prefer to pronounce as “Sudoku: Ball Detective.”

For fans of The Bigs 2 in either New York City or Los Angeles, 2K Sports is holding community events where you can get a chance to try out The Bigs 2 before it is released. If you are in Los Angeles, you will get a chance to hang out at the Wilshire Grand Hotel between 6PM and 8PM on June 30th, or the Hilton New York between 6PM and 8PM on July 1st. Check the jump for the full details from 2K Sports.
Hey guys and gals, 2K Sports was nice enough to invite Aeropause to join their developer conference call for their upcoming sports title, The Bigs 2. We will be sitting in on a question and answer session with Rob Nelson, the producer on The Bigs 2. Submit any questions you might have as we might get an open forum session at the end of the call.

Electronic Arts sent over a couple of screenshots from the upcoming family title, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. With the screenshots, we also received word that the development team for the Harry Potter game, have implemented a new facial animation system, allowing characters to show emotions and expressions. We are told that long gone are the vapid looks from Harry and crew in this release, which would be nice, because the animations blank looks from Harry in Order of the Phoenix were a bit unsettling.
Check the jump for full sized version of the two screenshots. Look for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince on July 3rd, 2009.
This week brings a slew of releases to the Nintendo Wii and DSi from the Nintendo store including a couple of WiiWare titles, a Virtual Console title and even a new DSi title.
This week’s titles include Drill Sergeant Mindstrong and NEVES Plus and Family Mini-Golf via WiiWare development, Art Style BOXLIFE from the DSiWare store and finally the classic SimEarth (TG16) for the Virtual Console. Hit the jump for the full info on each title, including the most important part, price.

Its a few weeks late, but Brinton Williams was nice enough to give some of the press, including Aeropause, an early look at Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, showing off a lot of the new fusion combos that will be used and the inside line on the Civil war storyline. We did not get an answer on how the Hulk could be there, but we did find out that regardless of what side you play, “you get to kick the crap out of Iron Man”.
Our favorite gaming CEO mouthpiece, Bobby Kotick, has once again mentioned the need for Sony to lower the price of their console, but he added a new wrinkle to the announcement.
It seems that Bobby seems to feel that the high price of the console has stagnated the growth of the PS3, and that Activision may have to cut development for the platform, as it sees lackluster sales in comparison to other platforms.
Now I am not a super smart businessman, but something tells me that while the PS3 may sell less copies of multiplatform titles than the Xbox 360 or the Nintendo Wii, but recent sales of Call of Duty 4 and all the Guitar Hero releases on the PS3 would make me think there is still value to publishing on the platform.
I just ran across this newish trailer for Cursed Mountain, a survival horror game coming exclusively to Wii later this year. It’s about two weeks old, so sorry if you’ve already seen it. I’m betting you haven’t.
As I learned from reading Nintendo Power, Cursed Mountain’s hook is kind of a Legend of Zelda dark world/light world thing. You’ll be presented with a task, but be unable to complete it alive without hopping back and forth between a real world and the spirit realm. The game recently launched a spiffy website that’s good for some aimless afternoon browsing… plus it features the World’s Scariest Box Art (not final) which I have hidden after the jump.
