PSP gets homebrewed touch screen
By Kat | October 3, 2006

The PSP TouchMe is a new touchscreen that will lay over the PSP’s screen and connect via USB. If it gets released, it’s to cost $56, and only support homebrew games, obviously since it’s a homebrew device. It sounds neat, but it’s no DS - not without the awesome gameplay that DS games provide. The team’s FAQ says they may release an open source library so that anyone can create games for the TouchMe.

This to me says that the PSP has lost out and is plumetting even further. People want touch screen so they go and make one because they have a PSP. It’s like folks modding XP to look like OSX.

That previous comment not only demeans the efforts of homebrew programmers, but ignores the fact that a touch-screen available for a technically far-superior handheld with mindblowingly superior games, really gives the PSP the edge.
Of course, while it’s a lovely idea, the homebrew scene is still a niche area for users lucky (or wise) enough to have re-graded their PSP; while I wouldn’t moan at that sort of price (if it’s plausible), I would have to question practicality and saleability for this reason.
Of course, if it comes out, I’d be likely to buy it “just because”. Visions of using a gaming “PSPDA” for a fraction of the price of a low-end, dedicated PDA are just too tantalising.

As mentioned befored this touch screen could turn the PSP into one of the ultimate portable devices by allowing home brew writers to create or port PDA/Palm applications to the PSP. And seeing as the PSP is actually cheaper than most PDA’s, the combination is rather appealing. imagine having your translator on PSP, or a Map/GPS promgram as well as the dedicated gaming benifits and widescreen movie format. Any other system that could do all this would be cool as well.

I came back to this on a search for my name… anybody know if this has moved any further? I’d like to keep tabs on this sort of development.
