Game consoles and all their dimensions

    By Shane | May 29, 2006

    consolesizes.jpg
Do you care to know the size of every current and next gen console out there? I know I do! Like how big is a 360 to a PS3? This is important data and must not be overseen. It looks like the PS3 is the winner by an over aged gamers nose hair, just beating out the X360 by mere micrometres. Sony wins. I feel bad for the Wii…so wee in comparison.

    Picture here and Picture here

    1. What’s the Mac mini doing there?

  • Injulen on May 29th, 2006 at 8:25 pm Says:

  • Wow. I knew the Wii was small, but WOW. That is small. That can fit like anywhere!! Even more reason to buy one now :D

  • Shane on May 29th, 2006 at 8:40 pm Says:

  • I think the Mini is there to throw people off, to balance things out. Or perhaps it’s a subliminal message of sorts…

I guess that’s why they call it Wii?

  • Mudhoney on May 30th, 2006 at 7:03 am Says:

  • You feel bad for Wii? Small seems like a good thing to me. Then again, I’m a sucker for cool running, efficient, quiet technology.

  • dcbronco on May 30th, 2006 at 7:13 am Says:

  • One of the excuses for the Japanese not buying the Xbox was it’s size a nd the small size of their apartments. The PS3 is larger than the original Xbox. Let’s see if we hear any complaints.

  • Fivos on May 30th, 2006 at 8:28 am Says:

  • I don’t care about size as long as it fits under my TV. They all seem to fit.
By the way, the PS3s PSU is internal and not a huge external one like on 360.

  • shane on May 30th, 2006 at 8:33 am Says:

  • Small apartment = small console, I never thought of that. Size is everything, isn’t it?

  • Skip Tracer on May 30th, 2006 at 11:16 am Says:

  • Wow, it only took two comments before “Wii is the gr8est thing since sliced bread!!” was posted. Imagine that!

I wonder if Nintendo actually pays these people a decent wage to browse for any console link and then spam it with pro-Nintendo propaganda.

  • Mr. Blinky Light on May 30th, 2006 at 11:19 am Says:

  • Not very informative.

  • SkinRock on May 30th, 2006 at 11:33 am Says:

  • The Mac Mini is probably in there to add more comparison, since a lot of people probably know how small it is…looks like the Wii is comparable to that.

Mudhoney, he was more than likely being sarcastic about feeling bad. Notice he said the PS3 wins for being so big…ya, it’s a joke.

dcbronco, the size complaint the Japanese had was in regards to the controller, not the console itself.

Fivos, thank god someone brought that up. Yes, the 360 PSU is friggen huge, I was really suprised about that when I finally saw one in person at a store. Oh, and don’t forget, PS3 has a next gen drive built in (Blu-Ray), the best 360 can offer is an external HD-DVD drive, about half the size of the 360 itself.

  • you_would_call_me_a_fanboy on May 30th, 2006 at 11:34 am Says:

  • Heh… and only 8 comments before “lol stupid fanboyz” was posted.

Why does peoples’ legitimate enthusiasm for the Wii instantly translate to fanboy-ism?

I didn’t know it was *that* small either. That’s awesome and I’m going to say so.

I don’t even understand why you bothered posting…

  • Rob on May 30th, 2006 at 11:45 am Says:

  • Because Nintendo is for kids, you pokemon playing fool. PS3 rocks my socks because I can kill Hookahs and shoot things. W00t!

  • aaron on May 30th, 2006 at 11:48 am Says:

  • The ps3 is 8726 centimeters cubed, while the 360 is 6616 centimenters cubed…isnt that more then mere micrometers???

  • Morkon on May 30th, 2006 at 11:50 am Says:

  • wow, that was childish Rob, maybe a Wii is right for you because Nintendo is “childish”

  • Jay on May 30th, 2006 at 12:00 pm Says:

  • Bottom line is when it comes to consoles smaller is better. The small revision of the PS2 is awesome. Looks good with all my other components, it’s easy to move around and doesn’t take up any space.

Why on earth would Sony make the PS3 bigger than the orginal XBOX? Thats why I eneded up getting a PS2 .. because the XBOX was simply too enormous (the games I play run on both systems) …

  • Anonymous on May 30th, 2006 at 12:04 pm Says:

  • now nobody can complain that they have no way to fill that 3.5×14 inch void…

  • SkinRock on May 30th, 2006 at 12:05 pm Says:

  • Is it as big as a gaming PC? Why do you guys want an insanely small console…you want the hardware, you need the room.

  • Rob on May 30th, 2006 at 12:08 pm Says:

  • Sorry Morkon, I forgot to turn the sarcasm machine on for you.

  • PS3IS Sexay on May 30th, 2006 at 12:31 pm Says:

  • I don’t know about you, but when I’m going to have sex with my highly-expensive piece of technology I like to have alotta ass - and man, that PS3’s got booty to burn. Sorry Wii, but I like my tech with a rack. Back to the short bus with you.

  • Asten on May 30th, 2006 at 12:52 pm Says:

  • Roughly an inch bigger in two of the three dimensions is “mere micrometres?” huh.

  • Brian on May 30th, 2006 at 12:52 pm Says:

  • it kinda suprises me that people seem to care mostly about the size. Im as suprised at the size of the Wii as anyone, but thats not why Im going to buy it, Im going to buy it because Im a fan of Mario and Zelda, plain and simple.

  • Joe S on May 30th, 2006 at 1:10 pm Says:

  • ROB

PS3 was cool until they announced the price. I got better things to do with money then spend it on a fucken $600 game machine. Like pay for University and take my girl out for nice dinners.

Plus who can say no to the Wii’s remote. Fuck that thing is sweet.

  • dysonl on May 30th, 2006 at 1:25 pm Says:

  • The Xbox can’t stand vertically, is ugly and lacks games that appeal to the Japanese market. Those are the reasons why it bombed in Japan. The PS3 won’t likely have any of those shortcomings. (That isn’t to say that it will not fail.)

  • zigie on May 30th, 2006 at 1:43 pm Says:

  • the mini is there ause of intel… you’ll run windows thus, it’s a “smart” buy…

  • rbelkin on May 30th, 2006 at 2:40 pm Says:

  • The MINI is there to show you have a fully powered computer with a dual DVD-R drive and if it’s designed correctly with some forethought and effort - it doesn’t have to be ginormous or require its own refridgeration unit to run the thing …

  • Jimmy T on May 30th, 2006 at 2:43 pm Says:

  • Hey Skip Tracer, you honestly think that Nintendo is paying people to post positive comments? They must have some serious dough because they basically walked out of E3 with most of the positive press. I think good, affordable technology was more likely the cause for the praise. No one is paying me to comment, and yet I’m very intrigued by this. The other systems lacked that intangible quality that Wii has. I felt like I was seeing something truly new.

  • Tommy on May 30th, 2006 at 3:09 pm Says:

  • Jimmy T.,

I agree, man. It’s a lot like the Eyetoy for me. I just hope they pull it off better. I mean, really, I’m sure they will. An entire game platform company, and all that, can’t really mess up something like this. But either way, I hope it’s good, ’cause the PS3 and 360 are too rich for my blood.

  • Icebug on May 30th, 2006 at 6:22 pm Says:

  • the only reason that the Mac is smaller is due to the base on the Wii
and the Wii is much thinner than the Mac
and hey, its not a Mac
    lol

  • Injulen on May 30th, 2006 at 7:26 pm Says:

  • Lol, I’m not being payed my Nintendo to give good props to their stuff. I HATED the Gamecube. But right now, the new nextgen console race is being won by the Wii in my eyes. I can’t see myself buying a PS3, and I’m only buying a 360 for the games and multiplayer. I’m buying the Wii for a TON of reasons. And now I have a new one: size.

  • ess on May 30th, 2006 at 8:32 pm Says:

  • Do you realize that means you can fit roughly 2.5 GALLONS of water/milk/whatever into the space that the PS3 takes up? You’re going to need 2.5 gallon containers’ worth of room for that thing. My entertainment system is crying… Guess I’ll have to wait for the redesigned PS3… uh… 2.

  • GoG85 on May 30th, 2006 at 11:47 pm Says:

  • well personally size doesnt matter but its nice to have a small console. i use my TV as a monitor so its on my computer desk. therefore i like to have as much space as possible on my desk the Wii is a perfect sixe for it.

another good thing is the portability. with the Wii you could get a laptop carry bag the size of PS3 and fit the Wii, controllers, cables and games.

  • Deburner on May 31st, 2006 at 3:41 am Says:

  • I have a 360 and carrying it with its powerbrick is pain in the ass usually i have to use a laptop bag and a 360 carrying case so i can carry it and 4 controllers
Im not sure but have we seen the power brick of the wii or the ps3
ps3 might not have as big of one because the insides could have a surge protector built in
wii will most likely have one

also the wii has a sensor bar people called its a long stick that is fragile

Im going to be buying the wii and another stinkin laptop case but it will carry the wii and all of its crap

If i bought a ps3 I’d have to buy like a ps3 carrying case(360 one is too small) and atleast one laptop bag

Some would say: “Size does matter”

  • TnT on May 31st, 2006 at 10:04 am Says:

  • Problem with the original XBox was that it was UGLY and not made to stand vertical. The PS3 might be big, but at least it has the PSU build in and it looks nice too.. :)

  • Lionel on May 31st, 2006 at 11:01 am Says:

  • The PS3 looks kinda like my scanner. It should still sell in Japan if it has Square Enix support, but I’m not sure how it will do in the US.

  • Steve on May 31st, 2006 at 11:56 am Says:

  • OMG!!! I want the ps3.. I heard from this guy that it can stand on it’s side!!! dat pwns!.

It is very funny how the ps3 fan boys make excuses. Oh we hated the xbox because it was big. What the ps3 is going to be bigger than the xbox 360? Well, it stands on it’s side. Did I mention that the origional xbox was ugly?

You guys need to stop being little babies. I chose the xbox because I like racing games, fps’s and sports games. Some of you chose the ps2 because of the rpg’s and some franchises. Good for you. I’m happy that you found something that you like. I bought the xbox 360 for a couple reasons. I knew that alot of my favorite franchise would be comming to it (forza motorsport). And I heard of alot of amazing games that are only coming to xbox 360 (dead rising, alan wake(pc too), test drive unlimited, gears of war, table tennis, condemned(pc too)). If I liked first party games from sony, I would have bought a ps3. Maybe some day when it is $200-$300 I will pick one up. If say, they make a new katamari demacy for it and gt5 is really cheap.

Any ways, back to console sizes. I bought the origional xbox because of the games, not the enormous size. I don’t want a ps3 now, because of the games, not the size. Anyone who looks to a console’s size as an excuse to not buy it really is a fucking moron. (No offense to anyone here)

  • pantsbutts on May 31st, 2006 at 8:16 pm Says:

  • does anyone think that the ps3 is just plain UGLY??? i think it is big, bulky, and looks like the kid in first grade with the helmet.

  • pantsbutts on May 31st, 2006 at 8:20 pm Says:

  • just to add…i have old VCRs that are better looking than the ps3!!
    VCRs!!!!
i am a huge ps fan, but they have lost me this round with $$$ and size. i dont understand what went wrong in that design department. too many people obviously had their hands in the design. it lacks everything that sony products are expected to have (with the exception of overpriced and cruddy components)

  • Jason on May 31st, 2006 at 10:21 pm Says:

  • It’s true about size and Japanese apartments. I live in Tokyo in a 22.4 sq. meter apartment. I don’t have a TV. Just two laptops. If someone gave me an old analog TV, I couldn’t accept it because I’d have no practical place to put it, unless in the middle of my floor. At least if someone gave me an LCD TV I could mount it on the wall.

That’s why I have a DS Lite as well. Perfect match for the amount of personal space the average single person in Tokyo has.

Surf the net w/ Firefox, play linux games and Windows ports, use Gimp to put funny faces on Gates and Steve Balmer pixs. Oh yea can’t get funnier than original pix of Steve “Monkey Man” Balmer! So get it? PS3 will be a Gaming Multi-Media Computer!

Wow that means (if close enough)that with my Blue Tooth keyboard and mouse, I can be chatting with Linux/Gaim Messenger on PS3 and my Windows Computer/MSN Messenger at the same time! Those girls with two cell phones going at same time won’t have nothing on me! ;)

On the Wii, you have to angle the blade right and put it the right distance. Not to mention, as you hit certain blood vessels, tissues & bones in their neck, the controller would rumble differently and make different sounds. I sure do love family games.”

but microsoft have limited themself by not doing a sony and putting a blue-ray drive in therefore limiting the size of the games.
The wii is a good onsole and very fun to play but has been let down by the graphics i think that with the gameplay of the wii with the graphics of the 360 you would get the ultmate gaming console
