Review: Section 8: Prejudice

When the original Section 8 hit PC in 2009, it was a title that had a lot of promise with several unique game mechanics, but server issues and a very poor single player experience, left it with a small, but faithful audience.  Section 8: Prejudice changes thing up by adding a lengthy campaign, better multiplayer modes and a price that almost sells itself.  Sure, it won’t replace Halo or Call of Duty in your rotation, but it offers enough to be a great diversion for the FPS fan.

Section 8: Prejudice splits its time between a single player campaign, and several different multiplayer modes.  As with the first Section 8 title, the single player mode is more for getting players prepped and ready for the multiplayer, but it is nice to see more time spent on giving us a true campaign, and not 8 thinly linked story references across all the multiplayer maps.  There is a decent story to be found this time around, and it will take more than a few paltry hours to complete.

But as said before, the single player is just the opening gambit for Section 8: Prejudice’s main point and that would be multiplayer.  In multiplayer, you have a choice between two standard modes – Conquest and Swarm.  Assault mode was recently unlocked, but it was not there in time to put this review together.    Conquest mode has you battling for control points across the map, as you would find in most modes of this time.  The big difference is that you can drop into the map at almost any location, and you can earn points that allow you to drop in reinforcements, like turrets, supply depots and even heavy vehicles.  Swarm plays out more like a Horde or Survival mode of gameplay where you are battling against waves of enemy forces.  It is no Gears, but Section 8: Prejudice does it well enough to stand on its own two feet in the multiplayer arena.

But it is the little touches that Timegate Studios have added to the genre that help Section 8: Prejudice stand out from the crowd.  While in multiplayer mode, there are several side quests that will pop up during the rounds that will have you doing other things for extra bonus points.  Sometimes, it will be to find some enemy Intel, and other times, it might be assassinating a VIP.  These are nice diversions, and add a lot of replay value to the multiplayer modes.  Sure, they are a little repetitive, and there are not a lot of types, but it mixes things up, and adds some extra strategy to Section 8: Prejudice.

It is not all a bed of roses however.  The graphics are very dated, and at some points, look downright ugly.  Sure, it is using the same tech from nearly two years ago, but I do not remember the first Section 8 looking so muddy and generic.  Voice acting also suffers again, with some pretty painful dialog trees that are belted out throughout the campaign.  Thankfully, there is not a ton of scripted or dialog sequences, and you will be thankful for that point.

Through it all though, Section 8: Prejudice does a lot of things so much better from the first incarnation, with the biggest being the price at release.  While I don’t normally go into the idea or price in reviews, it is notable, that the biggest criticism that the first game had was the pricing.  This time, Timegate went on the budget and marketplace avenue, and I think it is better for it, as you are getting a lot of content for the price and honestly, it is a fair amount of fun.  Section 8: Prejudice will never replace Bad Company 2 or Call of Duty as someone’s go to shooter, but when you need something a bit different, Section 8: Prejudice should fill the need quite nicely.  Section 8: Prejudice gets a 4 out of 5 Aeropausonauts.
