Review: Rift

Trion Worlds brings us Rift, a very unique and enjoyable MMO that stands out in a world that is dominated by WoW fanatics. Today we have so many online rpgs that can range from amazing to just plain horrible. Some role playing games make ripples in time like World of Warcraft, Eve Online, Tibia, Guild Wars, Runescape, and so on. In Rift you play as an Ascendant sent from the future into the past with a message of war, destruction, and death. You play either of 2 factions, The Guardians who are noble and believe in the old ways of the gods, as in a difference of the Defiants who believe that all of Tolera’s problems can be blamed because of the gods, so they look matters into their own hands, by melding technology along side of magic they fight on in protecting their world.

World

Traveling through Tolera can keep you on your toes because of randomly opening rifts. What makes Rift stand out from the rest of the games is the fact that its open world raid system allows random players in the same vicinity to fight off an invasion through a tare in the sky. Rifts can range in level and size, like a minor rift will have a small invasion and will not do much havoc, compared to a major rift causes a flood of baddies to come out from elemental enemies to even the dead. Rift does not branch out much from the typical MMORPG form. It’s the same routine when it comes down on getting experience points. There are always 8 of these to collect or 10 of these to kill or talk to this person across the freaking planet. The games engine will remind you of your times in Azeroth, very familiar gameplay not much on the difference I found with both games, but as in fun factor I can vouch on this one. Rift gets really lonely as do most rpgs if you don’t have any buddies playing. Seeing the game is fairly new gives you a chance to explore experiment and conquer the unknown.

Graphics

Riding on my mount through battlegrounds and magnificent backdrops places this game on the top of my list. The scenery is amazing and captivating, it’s hard to find many places with nothing going on. The game can lag if you are like me and try and see how much your graphics card can handle. No real complaints on graphics, the game looks great and runs smooth. The characters are very detailed and pleasant to the eye compared to many emotionless faces seen through out the ages. The rifts that appear out of no where can be breathtaking, the sky ripples and starts to bend and swirl, the ground breaks apart and suddenly you have these giant tentacles coming out of the rift tearing up the world around it and floods of evil beings swarm out.

Customization

Rift will keep you customizing your character through out leveling especially when you can change your characters roles. You can rise up to the cap level of 50 but still have so much to do. All servers play the same as other mmorpgs where you have PvP, PvE, and PvE RP. Your character is able to be customized in various ways. The classes are Warrior, Cleric, Rogue, and Mage, each with 8 different roles and combinations of each. Each class can be combined with 3 roles or “souls. A Warrior can be a Champion, Reaver, and Riftblade, or a Mage can be a combination of a pyromancer, warlock, and dominator. One tank can be different from the next tank because of its setup. Rift by far has captivated my attention, which is hard to do, ask my mom. Great game and the ability to change your format of your character in mid game without having to re-skill is a big plus. A bit of advice when setting points into your soul tree, remember to save. You can change from tank to dps in a matter of a click, which works out when you’re playing in one of those open world raids. Like some MMOs the game can get really addicting, extremely fast. The fact that it is a new game out in the genre that so many companies have branched out and it can stand up to high expectations makes this a great game and a must have.

I enjoyed my play through Rift and the time I spent leveling my character. The open raiding system rules, the story keeps you hooked, and graphics make it a great play. Like all new games it will run you about $50 bucks, I highly suggest you get the digital collectors addition that comes with a bunch of goodies that will keep you ahead of the group for a while. For more information and where to buy check out Trion’s website. See you guys in Tolera.
