Review: Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword

Submitted by on May 25, 2011 – 11:00 pm2 Comments

Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword brought to us by Paradox Interactive and Talesworlds Entertainment is a role playing game that will consume the rest of your days, well for at least a month or until your eyes bleed out. A sequel to Mount & Blade, this new installment carries in new weapons, tactics, and hours of gameplay. With epic battles, awesome loot, ability to take down towns and kingdoms, this game sucks you in better than an all you can eat sushi bar.

The graphics are better than the original mount and blade. Scenery, backdrop, and puffs of white smoke from your flintlock pistol pretty up the game. The graphics could look a thousand times better, but from playing the game most of the attention was placed in making this game just awesome. What issues I did have in the beginning of the game like glitches and freezing were fixed with patch 1.40, so I suggest downloading it unless you like restarting a new game after 8 hours of gameplay.

The immense map that you play on consists of many different kingdoms, from the Polish to the Swedish. Great thing about this game is the non linear style of play; you don’t have to follow the story line if you don’t want to. I have played countless hours of just riding my horse around and killing anyone I felt was a threat. Money talks in this game, the more money and loot you cash in gives you better armor and better weapons. The ability to hire mercenaries and soldiers to make your army bigger is such a big plus compared to other rpgs where you have to convince someone to join you or earn their trust through series of favors. The downside of having such a large army feeding and supporting them will run a strain on your coin bag. If you don’t handle your money well you will be in dept with your men and they might turn on you, I learned this lesson painfully fast.

The world in this game does not revolve around you, like you think it does in real life, the AI is constantly changing the battlefield, kingdoms and towns fall to armies and ruthless kings. Bandits and rebels rape and pillage small towns. The battles are pretty epic. At times it’s just you and your horse and what ever weapon you are wielding; eventually you’re screaming commands to your men, telling them what formations to get into and rules of engagement. The battles get really can be fought from the end of the battlefield with your rifle or up close and personal with a sword. Like a typical rpg you have weight on all the weapons and armor. Weapons and armor do have stats which are essential when going into battle. For example have a high armor rating on your legs will keep you from receiving heavy amounts of damage when riding your steed into a group of enemies. Your army also levels along with you as you fight battle after battle. Some of you men will go up the ranks and become more efficient with their type of fighting, like a swordsman can become a veteran swordsman and have higher skills and survive a lot longer on the field then that you’re more novice soldiers. For yourself you can level up your stats like shooting from horseback or effectively using a sword.

Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword is one of the best rpgs I have played this year and enjoyed every hour that I spent ignoring my wife. Well balanced gameplay, addictive battle engine, and hours of fun will keep you coming back for more.
