Ones to Watch: Xbox 360 Releases for May 2011

Submitted by on May 2, 2011 – 4:52 pmNo Comment

Here we are, entering the month of May and we have a decent slate of titles set to release for those waiting for news out of E3 next month.  For some it might be the multiplayer/singleplayer action found in Brink, while others might enjoy the scenery as the blow by it at 100 miles an hour in DiRT 3, but I am sure that you will find something to suit your gaming needs while you try to guess the new Kinect franchise that is being announced next month.

As for our case mod, I tried to find something Thor related to celebrate the newest Marvel movie release that is happening this month, but I came up completely dry.  Apparently, Thor is not the biggest hero name when it comes to console mods, but I did find an Iron Man mod that will have to fit the bill.  It is a pretty cool mod complete with the Unibeam power core prominently featured on the side of the case.  If you want to read more head over to DeviceMag.com for the full scoop.

With that out of the way, continue on below to get the cream of the crop in May 2011 on the Xbox 360.  Also, make sure to check out the Ones to Watch articles for the PS3/PSP, Wii/DS and the PC.

Brink (Splash Damage/Bethesda) – After a long journey, that included a eight month delay, Brink is finally seeing the end of the tunnel for release.  Brink is looking to take players to The Ark, a perfect city that holds the last remnants of humanity.  Of course, things are quite perfect, or we would not have a game in Brink, so we have the corporate security faction that is trying to hold back a group of rebels that are causing havok on the Ark.  The neat thing about Brink is the fact that single player, co-op and multiplayer weave together seamlessly to give players multiple ways to attack the main story.  Your skills and stats cross through all the modes, and all the customization features should allow for so many unique character creations.  It will be interesting to see whether there is enough of a following with Brink to keep it relevant on the multiplayer scene, but right now, it looks to have enough unique hooks to make it stand out from the crowd.  Look for Brink on May 10th, 2011.

L.A. Noire (Rockstar Games) – The big sell for L.A. Noire for most people has to be the uncanny valley that is being approached with the facial animations in the game.  The tech that Rockstar has put together for this title is absolutely amazing, capturing so many subtle motions in the human face.  But beyond the tech, we have what could be the next step in storytelling from the folks at Rockstar.  Some might hold up Red Dead Redemption as a great game for story, but L.A. Noire seems to be intensely focused on providing a cohesive story that doesn’t feel like going from point to point on a map to get missions.  Some might be turned off by the amount of detective work that will be featured in the title, but overall, it looks like Rockstar has another great hit on their hands with L.A. Noire.  LA Noire is set for release on May 17th, 2011.

DiRT 3 (Codemasters) – I will make no bones about it, I am a whore for the DiRT series.  I have played all the DiRT titles on both PC and Xbox 360 and have enjoyed the hell out of them.  The only issue I had with DiRT 2 was the idea that weather really never played a part in the game.  Weather is back in full effect in DiRT 3, complete with tarmac, snow, dirt, mud, rain and so much more.  The development tech is pushing the tech as well, and has added a whole new mode of gameplay called Gymkhana for gamers.  In Gymkhana, you will take your rally car out onto an obstacle course, where you are sliding under cars, jumping over ramps and performing all kinds of tricks and stunts.  Gymkhana is not a huge thing for me, but it could add something new for fans that are looking to find something different in the franchise.  Look for DiRT 3 on May 24th, 2011.

Hunted: The Demon’s Forge (inXile Entertainment/Bethesda) – Hunted did not exactly step out with its best foot forward at last year’s E3, leaving me a little flat.  Over the next year, inXile has spent a lot of time cleaning up the gameplay with the intent to create a middle ages cover/action shooter.  Of course, you don’t use guns in Hunted, instead opting for one character that uses magic and melee, while the other character is centered around ranged attacks and magic.  I like the idea that they are improving some of the aspects of the genre, like not having to run over to people to give them health, instead tossing them health packs to heal.  Timing might be the biggest hurdle for Hunted, as it is coming out very close to E3, but who knows, maybe it might give people something different to play when they get tired of hearing about the latest rumors about the soon to announce Nintendo console.  Look for Hunted: The Demon’s Forge on May 31st, 2011.

And with that we have finished off another month of great releases on the Xbox 360.  As a disclaimer, I will state that these articles do not focus on exclusives, but just titles in general that look to be the cream of the crop based on what writers have read or demoed at events.  If you disagree with any of the picks or like what has been selected, let us know what your opinion below or on our Facebook page.  See you back here next month for another round of great titles  to play on the Xbox 360.
