Ones to Watch: PC Releases for May 2011

Submitted by on May 4, 2011 – 1:00 pmOne Comment

Okay, so the month of April may have been the month of Portal, but the month of May is shaping up to be a great one for those that play their games on the PC.  We have a great selection of titles that will placate the taste buds of all genres.  You want an FPS – we got that.  Want a driving title – we got that.  You want a story driven, RPG that was ported from a half a year old console port – yeah, we even have that.

Our case mod this month is almost as impressive as our list of games.  The owner of this PC is a fan of Battlestar Galactica, and has modded his case to look like the ship of the show’s title.  It is a very creative mod and if you head over to Gamefront.net, you can get some more pictures and a video of the full case mod.

Don’t forget to check out all the other Ones to Watch for your favorite platforms on the Xbox 360, PS3/PSP and for the Wii/DS.  And with that let’s get on with the Ones to Watch in May 2011 on the PC.

Brink (Splash Damage/Bethesda) – Okay, Brink has been a while in the making, but the wait is just about over.  This new shooter from Bethesda and Splash Damage has the look of a Team Fortress 2 styled game, but seriously changes up the formula.  You have a full single player campaign, that can be played in co-op as well, along with a complementing multiplayer component as well.  Experience will carry between all modes, allowing you to unlock all kinds of weapon modifications and outfit customizations.  Also separating Brink from the FPS pack is the inclusion of the Smart Movement Across Random Terrain (SMART) system, which blends in a parkour style of movement to the game, allowing more freeform movement while navigating the maps.  Brink is still coming off of several delays and a less than stellar showing at E3 last year, leaving a lingering doubt over the title, but all the new videos have it looking a lot better than it was at that point.  Look for Brink on May 10th, 2011.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (CD Projekt/Atari) – Looking back to April of 2007, it was hard to believe that a little company out of Eastern Europe would make a ground breaking RPG that would end up selling over a million units as a PC exclusive title.  The Witcher 2 is looking to  up the ante on that one, with a new graphics engine, the ability to import your saves from the first title and continuing the mature, deep storyline that was present in the first title.  Geralt is still the main protagonist, and we will be doing a lot more Witchering as you move through the story that presents decisions with shades of grey, rather than hard black and white choices.  Some might be put off by the sexual content, and as with the first Witcher title, there is a learning curve.  But it looks like it could be the premier RPG title of the year so far.  The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is set for release on May 17th, 2011.

Fable III (Lionhead Studios/Microsoft Games Studio) – It has been awhile since the Fable brand has graced the presence of the PC.  After skipping the second installment, Fable III is ready for PC with a new set of features, including higher resolution graphics, full 3D support and all the DLC that has been released for the title on the Xbox 360.  Fable III did hit mixed reviews from the console community, and for some, the inclusion of Games for Windows LIVE in the title will make it a poison pill for some.  However, I look at the first Fable title as a great PC title that used the strengths of the platform, and I hope that the same will be true of Fable III.  Look for Fable III on May 17th, 2011.

DiRT 3 (Codemasters) – DiRT 2 was a beautiful title on the PC when it was released in late 2009.  Using DirectX 11, and all sorts of other graphical bells and whistles, it became one of the premiere racing titles on the PC at the time.  DiRT 3 looks to continue that trend by pushing the graphical bar, while mixing in all sorts of new terrain for the tracks.  Finally we get snow, rain and more.  And for fans of the EXTREME sports, DiRT 3 will include a new mode of gameplay called Gymkhana, where you perform stunts like big air jumps, sliding under trucks and crazy drift turns.  While I am not one for Gymkhana, it does have its fans.  Also, as with Fable III, some might balk at the inclusion of Games For Windows LIVE.  DiRT 3 is looking like it is on track to be the best racing title on the PC again in 2011.  Look for DiRT 3 on May 24th, 2011.

Hunted: The Demon’s Forge (inXile/Bethesda) – When Hunted: The Demon’s Forge was first annonced a year ago, it was in a weird place.  It definitely was looking to Gears of War for inspiration, but took that gameplay in a whole new direction.  With more work however, it seems to have become more than a simple cover based shooter clone.  I have really become enamored with the story that is being told in Hunted, and the characters are starting to grow on me as I watch more of the preview videos.  What really sold me on this title though, is the mission editor that is built in called Crucible.  I could see myself spending hours just creating all kinds of scenarios that can be shared through the community.  That said, Hunted is still going to be a tough sell to the fans, but I honestly think there is enough there to make it stand out on a crowded shelf.  Hunted: The Demon’s Forge is set for release on May 31st, 2011.

And with that we have come to the end of another month of great PC releases.  Don’t agree with the list?  Let us know in the comments below or on the Aeropause Facebook page.  Until next time, enjoy your month of gaming on the PC in May.

The Witcher 2 is the top of my favorites. What a game, mind blowing graphic and nice story.
