Direct2Drive Possibly Being Acquired By Gamefly
Direct2Drive is one of those services that has lived on in the shadow of Steam for many years. Run by IGN, it is a direct download solution that offers up an assortment of PC games for sale, but it appears that its run at IGN is at an end.
According to a report over at MCV UK, Gamefly may be purchasing the download service from IGN for an undisclosed sum. I am not sure what this does for Gamefly exactly, as they have made their living mailing out game rentals for all the major console platforms. Then again, people felt it didn’t make much sense for Gamefly to purchase ShackNews, and that has worked out pretty well for the company.
The deal is supposed to be announced early next week, so it will be interesting to see what plans Gamefly has in store for the download service.
