Doctors disagree over 3DS effects on young children’s eyes
Nintendo has been cautious with the 3DS, stating that the 3D effects are recommended for ages 7 and older. The 3DS manual states this, even the game boxes all carry cute 3D7+ icons.
Some optometrists, however, are bullish on the device actually being a help for young children, potentially identifying eye issues. According to this AP technology article, not being able to see the 3D effect could be a sign of amblyopia. And the earlier docs can work to combat eye issues, the better.
But as the article points out, optometrists are not medical doctors. And the apparent natural enemies of optometrists, ophthalmologists, might remain unconvinced. One quoted doctor finds the idea of the 3DS diagnosing eye problems “all sort of exploration and speculation.”
Glasses-free, highly personal 3D devices simply haven’t been fully tested with kids in any grand scale (or adults, for that matter), and Nintendo’s careful stance is more of a legal cover-our-ass move than a genuine medical recommendation.
Who will win in the end? Optometrists or ophthalmologists? Only one way to know for through… with a massive grudge match of Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition! EYE GOT NEXTS.
