OnLive Finally Listens to Everyone, Introduces a Flat Rate Subscription Plan

OnLive has been on a roll as of late.  They have announced some new game partnerships, they actually produced and shipped a Micro Console for the TV and most notably, had a rather robust sale over the Black Friday weekend.  However, the one thing that they have lacked according to just about everyone that has had a thought about the service is a flat rate subscription plan.  Most people have found the service to be decent, if not better than expected, but they all have the same beef – I don’t want to buy the games from you, nor do I want to rent them.

Well, I believe the clamor must have finally fallen upon some important ears, because starting in January 2011, you will be able to pay $9.99 for all the OnLive gaming you can handle.  And to sweeten the pot, many of the current subscribers to the base service will have free beta access to this service until launch.

Is this the golden pill for OnLive?  Hard to tell, as it seems that most who were casually interested in the service mentioned lack of physical ownership of titles, as well as the lack of a subscription plan in fueling their disinterest in OnLive.  I would mention that GameTap thought this would be a viable plan many years ago, but a lack of current, mainstream content killed any hope of their flat rate plan surviving.  OnLive will have to beef up their offerings from the current 40+ titles if they want to convince gamers that the service is of any value to them.

I still don't think the world is ready for streaming games and I doubt the 3 consoles makers or Steam need to worry much now but in 10 years things might change. For now I like having games not require internet access for single player…thought with DRM like ubisoft it wouldn't matter either way now would it?
