Ones to Watch: Wii/DS for October 2010
Last month I noted a large number of games shipping with peripherals. This month, there’s so many I don’t even have the strength to list them all. Guns, pianos, dance mats, microphones, card scanners… it’s nuts out there, folks. The DS version of Deal or No Deal comes inside a strongbox carrying case!
Nintendo’s first-party releases include Wii Party, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Art Academy and the new Pokemon Ranger. Plus some big sequels for retail darling Just Dance and hipster darling Scribblenauts. What’s on your buy list for October?
October 3
Wii Party (Wii) – There’s a mode where you hide the Wii Remote in your house and your opponent must find it by listening for audio cues. THERE’S A MODE WHERE YOU HIDE THE WII REMOTE IN YOUR HOUSE AND YOUR OPPONENT MUST FIND IT BY LISTENING FOR AUDIO CUES. That is grade-A badass. Can you believe the PlayStation Move doesn’t have a speaker? What a bunch of amateurs.
October 4
Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs (Wii) – The Ranger sub-franchise has become just as reliable as the core Pokemon series. But I guess we’ll never get that Pokemon Trozei 2.
October 5
NBA Jam (Wii) – Not that I had any interest in this one in the first place, but I can’t get behind games where the visual style is “Let’s make it look awful, just like it did 20 years ago!”
Rock of the Dead (Wii) – Finally, another use for your guitar controller that isn’t that horrid Fret Nice game! Also: Felicia Day. Also on PS3, 360.
Sid Meier’s Pirates (Wii) – Here’s something else I can’t get behind: developers stapling their name on games like it’s a vanity license plate. Also on everything else because it’s a really old game. Classic! I meant Classic!
October 11
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (WiiWare) – From the Nintendo Power review: “Is it as good as the Genesis games? No.” Also on PSN, XBLA, iPhone.
October 12
Super Scribblenauts (DS) – The only adjectives I want to hear out of this one are “not crappy,” “not broken,” and “not puffed up by critics who sold us purely on concept while ignoring the drastically busted-ass controls and counter-productive par system that encouraged you to solve every puzzle with a gun and a jetpack like it’s some kind of damn Xbox game.”
Just Dance 2 (Wii) – Just when you thought the casual Wii market was tapped out, along came Just Dance. The sequel adds a “2″ to the title.
October 17
Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Wii) – Oh yeah, baby. Turn into that car. Just takes a double-tap. Yeah, drive to the right. Now get out that big, pink whip.
October 19
DJ Hero 2 (Wii) – Remember gang, this is the Number One New Intellectual Property of 2009! If that doesn’t sell you, Activision doesn’t know what will! Seriously. They don’t know. Also on PS3, 360.
October 25
Art Academy (DS) – It’s 2010 and this is the kind of thing we all expected would be a DS launch title.
October 26
Rock Band 3 (Wii, DS) – Did they make a new Guitar Hero this year? Anybody know? Also on PS3, 360.
Crafting Mama (DS) – In Britain, this one is called “Cooking Mama World: Hobbies & Fun.” Is the word “crafting” slang for something dirty in the UK?
