Ones to Watch: PC Releases for October 2010
So here we are coming into the meaty part of the holiday release schedule, and I am surprised at the lack of solid titles that should be available on the in October 2010. I mean, there are a lot of games coming out, but the quality of the titles leaves a bit to be desired, unless you missed out on some older games which will have collections this month. Specifically, Borderlands and Tropico 3 both will have game of the year editions that include all their DLC packs in one package for those that missed out on the games before.
Our case mod this month comes from TechDigest, and the case takes on Pink Floyd, with “The Wall”. I am loving the front of the case which has the face smashing out of the wall in great detail. Also, I have a thing for any case that sits on caster wheels. Makes me look a little more sane when I see my PC case that sits on wheels. If you want to read more about the Pink Floyd The Wall case mod, head over to TechDigest to check out the full details.
With all of that out of the way, hit the jump to read all the games that you will want to spend your money on if you own a gaming PC in October. Also, make sure to check out the other Ones to Watch articles for Wii/DS, Xbox 360 and PS3/PSP here on Aeropause.com.
Arcania – Gothic 4 (JoWood Entertainment) – Now I know that putting a Gothic game in the Ones to Watch is a strange idea, as the Gothic games have normally been received lukewarm here in the US, but developer JoWood have taken several steps to make Arcania – Gothic 4 easier to get into from previous versions of the game. Things like a mini-map that rides on the HUD along with a quest tracker are just some of the newest items for the Gothic series. I also like the idea that your previous character from the series has messed things up really bad and now you create a new hero to take the now evil king down a notch or two. I still see Gothic 4 being a super hardcore RPG title, and it may not crack into the mainstream, but so far, the title is shaping up as a solid RPG experience for gamers that are willing to give the game a chance. Arcania – Gothic 4 is set to hit retail shelves and digital storefronts on October 12th, 2010.
Fallout New Vegas (Obsidian Entertainment/Bethesda Softworks) – Most PC gamers do not need to be told that they need to get a Fallout game. I mean, Fallout New Vegas is taking everything that was made fantastic in Fallout 3, but moving it to a setting that is a bit familiar to old school Fallout players. We go back to the Mojave desert area and get to see Vegas f’or the first time around in a Fallout game. A huge weapon customization tree, along with new perks and skills just add to the improvements that are coming from Obsidian Entertainment with their take on the Fallout brand. About the only down thing you can find on this title might be the fact that Obsidian’s track record as of late has not been great. Alpha Protocol did not set the world on fire, and many PC gamers are still sore over Knights of the Old Republic II and the rush job that was put on that title. Fallout New Vegas is set to hit retail shelves and digital storefronts on October 19th, 2010.
nail’d (Techland/Deep Silver) – nail’d has been a big curiosity for me. Beyond causing all kinds of issues with my spell checker (can we mandate caps for the first letter of a title from now on), the game is made by a developer that is normally known for making first person western titles. But Techland have also been known for making engines that are great for outdoor environments, and an off-road arcade racing game fits the outdoor part of that equation nicely. Each of the tracks has great open spaces, insane jumps and what appeared to be some insane stat tracking and leaderboard stats. I do have to wonder if there is an appetite for another ATV/Motocross title after Pure, but this one does lean far more into the realm of arcade mayhem than Pure, so that could sit in favor of nail’d. Look for nail’d on retail shelves and digital storefronts on October 19th, 2010.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 (Lucasarts) – First off, thank you Lucasarts for finally acknowledging that PC’s can actually handle this game at launch, rather than handing us a contrived excuse for delaying the release of a quality Star Wars title. The first game in the series gave gamers a top notch story, but you became too powerful, too soon, making for a repetitive experience by the end of the game. Force Unleashsed 2 will continue the solid story that was started in the first, but will start to flesh out the main character a bit more, and try to answer the question of what happened to our first hero. Was he a clone or is he a real person. As long as they keep the gameplay fast and inventive, as well as fixing the control scheme so keyboard/mouse users can actually play the game functionally, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 will be a solid game for PC gamers during the holiday season. Look for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 on retail shelves and digital storefronts on October 26th, 2010.
And that looks to be it for the month of October 2010. Sure we were suppose to get Fable III, but the delay on that killed any notion of receiveing that title. Also, if you have not picked up Borderlands, Dragon Age or Tropico 3, October will be a good month for you as all of them have Game of the Year editions coming out that include all the DLC for each title. Not a bad deal from any stretch of the imagination. Did we miss a title that you think should be in the October round up of titles to pick up in October? Voice your opinion in the comments below, or in our forums. See everyone back here in a month with more Ones to Watch on PC.
