Epic Mickey coming to comics and iOS
At last weekend’s New York Comic Con, an Epic Mickey panel with Warren Spector has revealed new details on the game and how it will step beyond the Wii and into comics and iOS devices. Disney watcher Jim Hill has noted, among other reveals, that longtime voice actor Frank Welker is the voice of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Under Disney’s tenure, Oswald did not speak (although he did talk in his later work with the Walter Lantz studio, courtesy voice legend June Foray.)
Spector mentioned that the game’s collectibles include E-tickets (which were once used to denote a Disney Park’s top attractions, back when the rides were all ticket-based), pins (pin trading has been a Disney Park merchandise moneymaker for the last decade) and film reels. The game will also contain plenty of Hidden Mickeys.
Comic writer Peter David was on hand to discuss his work on the upcoming Epic Mickey comic book, particularly his use of a lost Disney World attraction, the Adventurer’s Club. One of the former Pleasure Island’s keystone operations at WDW, the Club was closed in 2008. It’s not in the game, but its status as Lost Disney makes it fair game for David to include in his comic (and he is a big fan of the Adventurer’s Club, so this had to be fun for him.)
Within a week or so, an Epic Mickey iOS app will be released. The app will be free (like many Disney-created adver-apps), but offer several in-app purchases. Included among these will be stories from the game’s universe and the comic itself. The core app will include character bios, trailers and other promotional media. The app will initially include a grayed-out map of the game, but those areas will sequentially unlock as we get closer to launch.
Spector was asked if Epic Mickey could find it’s way to PS3 and 360, but he seems to have dodged the question, citing that the Wii allows him access to the greatest audience… plus he called himself a Nintendo Nerd.
Epic Mickey is expected in stores November 30 in NA, November 26 in the EU.
