Netflix Goes Disc-less in October for US, Now for Canada

While it was nice that the PS3 added Netflix Instant Streaming to its console about a year ago, it sucked that I would have to put a disc in the device in order to use it.  This made using the Xbox 360 my default choice for Netflix Instant Streaming in my household.  Well, that Xbox advantage is about to end and it may be happening sooner rather than later depending on where you live.

Starting today in Canada, Netflix Instant Streaming goes live and without a disc.  However, US console owners are not as lucky.  We have to wait a little bit longer, until the icon is added to the media bar starting in October.  I would assume that it will either be a downloadable app that you get from the Playstation Store, but more than likely, it will come via a firmware upgrade.  So, while PS3 users will get a disc-less version of Netflix Instant Streaming, it might take a month to actually use it.  Yes, that was a bad PS3 firmware upgrade joke.

Given that PlayMemories is an app you get off the store and installs to the Photo XMB, I'm guessing Netflix will be distributed the same way and land in the Video XMB.

I can't wait. We use streaming Netflix all the time in my household on the PS3 and this will make it *that* much better.

Here's hoping they beef up the client even more, not sure how but USB keyboard support for searching would be cool.
