XFire Bought, Most of Team Leaving

Submitted by on August 2, 2010 – 6:44 pm3 Comments

It’s not clear yet who their new owners are, but XFire has been purchased and most of the team that built the system is leaving. A broadcast was sent out in the software itself and is also inconspicuously shown in the sidebar on their website.

I’ve liked XFire because of their independence, even if they apparently weren’t able to get the kind of traction something like Steam did. The client software wasn’t overly intrusive into the games it supported and it didn’t seem to eat up much in terms of machine resources unlike things like Steam. Any guesses from our readers on who owns them now before it’s announced?

See the full text from the website after the break.

Team Leaving

August 2, 2010–Xfire has been purchased by another company. Most of the team that has brought you Xfire for the last 6 years is leaving, including me. We’ve enjoyed our time and I personally am sad that I was only able to do 127 releases. Good bye and game on!

To be honest, there were not as independant as people thought. I mean, they were owned by MTV Games for some time now, along with GameTrailers and other Internet services. I look at this as MTV Games not seeing profit from the unit and spinning it off to a mysterious buyer. Who knows, maybe we will find out it was Raptr or someone of that ilk, wanting the userbase and feature set.

What about Amazon. Weren't they in the market for Steam a few years ago? Maybe they've decided now is the time and I doubt Valve is looking to divest themselves of Steam now.

There have been a few rumors about the buyer this afternoon. 3D Realms was the craziest. Steam was mentioned, for the video and screen capture tech. Also heard another company that was unknown to me. I could see Microsoft acquiring them to jumpstart this mystery PC push they were talking about after E3.
