Ones to Watch: Wii and DS for August 2010

Submitted by on August 5, 2010 – 12:05 pm4 Comments

It’s Other M month for Wii owners. And by that we don’t mean the Other Madden that isn’t in HD. We mean Metroid: Other M, Nintendo’s Team Ninja-created new take on the Metroid franchise. As I have said before, with Metroid’s impact on a steep decline ever since the first Metroid Prime, I remain astonished that Nintendo fielded a new entry in the series. Not only is Other M a significant departure (featuring more voice acting and storyline bits than Metroid Prime 3), but it is another installment in Nintendo’s new plan of making games that focus mostly on NES-style Wii Remote controls. I’m nervous, but I pre-ordered it.

Here’s how the rest of the schedule looks for August.

August 10
Madden NFL 11 (Wii) – Yup, it’s happening again. There is a cartoon character on the cover.

August 24
Grease (Wii, DS) – Hey, we own the ‘Grease’ license, how fast can we get something on the racks that’s kind of like Just Dance? THAT fast.

Harvest Moon Grand Bazaar (DS) – Remember when Harvest Moon was a niche title? Now it’s its own genre.

Ivy the Kiwi? (Wii, DS) – Created by Sonic’s Yuji Naka, this platformer arrives not only with an extraneous question mark, but in both retail and ‘Ware versions. While the retail releases contain 100 levels, the WiiWare and DSiWare versions will 50. I’m assuming they’re all different, so if you wanted to bug the f out on Ivy the Kiwi? levels, you could snap up all four versions and go to town, son.

NHL 2K11 (Wii) – Getting to your store juuust ahead of EA’s plastic peripheral-based hockey game, NHL Slapshot.

August 31
Guilty Party (Wii) – Thank you Disney for making a family party game that actually makes clever use of the word “Party.” Also thanks for making one that people say might not suck.

Metroid: Other M (Wii) – Really? That’s STILL the official subtitle?

As a huge fan of the Metroid franchise, I am seriously looking forward to continuing my tradition of plunking down my half a hundred for Other M on launch day, playing it like crazy for about a week, getting stuck on a boss, and then not touching it again for over a year.

Fuck off Joe Fourhman and STFU about the name already. As a long time Metroid, I don't like to see people denigrate the series as you did. Metroid is still one of Nintendo's most venerated franchises and has a history of stellar, groundbreaking games. Metroid is a series that's grossly misrepresented by the media and public alike and are confused as what it actually is. Nintendo doesn't actually know how to market the franchise properly. What's not in decline is the series' quality and its ability to take risks. Other M is a fresh new take on classic Metroid. That's all I need to know. I have faith in Nintendo and Team Ninja to deliver a stellar Metroid title worthy of its legacy.

Sorry, but it's a dumb subtitle.

The thing is, Metroid just doesn't sell that great. There was like a million sale dropoff between Prime 1 and Prime 2. Prime 3 did about a million and a half on Wii, and I would have expected Nintendo to put the franchise back in the vault for a while. They keep thinking that Metroid is their ticket to the hardcore shooter m-drama fans, and it just never happens. That's not Metroid's fault; it points to the kind of things those gamers value that the Wii doesn't have (HD, online play, etc). It just feels like Nintendo needs Metroid around so they can say “See, we DO have games like that!”

There was almost a decade between Metroid on SNES and Metroid on GameCube. It was a dead property. Fondly remembered, but with zero relevance to the audience at the time. Then Prime and Fusion came out and now “Metroid” is a relevant, name brand again. So I'm not going to fall into the “they don't know how to market” complaint. I think they did a fine job… sales just keep proving that the market does not have the appetite for Metroid games in the way they do for Nintendo's other classic properties.

That's why Other M is such a departure, because Nintendo knows a Prime 4 would see a further erosion in sales. I hope it's good, but it seems to be morphing in a direction apart from what I personally liked about Prime. I preferred the silent protagonist, the feeling of isolation (IE, no cheesy space opera story)… and I worry about the controls being wonky.

But like I said, I pre-ordered it (thanks to Amazon offering $20 credit with purchase), because I too, enjoy the franchise.
