Ones to Watch: PS3 and PSP for August 2010
Hold on a sec, I need to dig a hole through my wall of backlog titles to see the release list. Here we are. What? I did all that digging for this?
Oh and why are you even looking at an upcoming PSP release when you can buy the digital download of GTA Chinatown Wars or Lunar: Silver Star Harmony for just $15 this week during the Summer Sale on the PSN? Oops almost forgot the fun and quirky Patchwork Heroes is only $5 this week, too. Seriously get over there and buy something. I nabbed GTA: Chinatown Wars and am toying with the idea of getting Patchwork Heroes and Lunar.
Ok back to the release list. Here goes:
August 10th
Madden NFL 11 (PS3, PSP) — I hear there’s a new mode in this game that introduces absolute Football newbies to the game. I’m not a sports person so that would be for me. PSNation had their impressions of the demo on their podcast Episode 175.
August 17th
Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days (PS3) is creating a bit of buzz about the multiplayer game modes in this one but I haven’t bothered to play the demo yet. I will throw the demo on my download queue since you asked so nicely. Or maybe that was that voice I hear asking me nicely.
August 17th
Ys Seven (PSP) is boasting many many hours of action RPG gameplay in case you need another PSP time sink. Remember, go buy GTA Chinatown Wars or Lunar Silver Star Harmony this week if you need something on PSP first, then look at this. I still have Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker taking up every PSP gaming moment, and once that’s done I’ll be playing GTA Chinatown Wars.
August 24th
Mafia II (PS3) makes one request of us and that is to stop me if you’ve heard this one: it’s an open world game about organized crime with driving missions, killing missions, and depictions of terrible brutality against your fellow man. I never played the original and I have a thing about modern technology in my games, so I’d have to mess with a demo or a rental to be sure this one fits my admittedly very large third person action sandbox game appetites.
August 31st
Ace Combat: Joint Assault is going to try and cram a jet combat flight sim onto the PSP? Really? You can’t come up with a portable game that’s built for the hardware instead?
August 31st
Valkyria Chronicles II is the PSP-only sequel to a well-regarded but sales-challenged SEGA RPG on the PS3. With slow sales of the the first game I can’t blame them for wanting to control costs on a sequel. Do I think this game will sell a whole lot better? Maybe, but remember this is the PSP.
Look for more gaming optimism in next month’s report on new releases. If you’ll excuse me I need to go rebuild my wall of backlog releases. I need to pick something off the top to play since I just finished up my hardcore difficulty play through of Just Cause 2.
