Ones to Watch: PC Games for August 2010

Submitted by on August 4, 2010 – 2:47 pmNo Comment

Yes, after a couple of months of conflicts and E3 previews, the Ones to Watch for PC is back on track, and unfortunately, it comes during what might be the worst month ever for releases in quite some time.  I mean, I know that August is a normally slow month in anticipation of the fall releases, but really, two games worth mentioning in total for the PC this month?  And no doomsayers, this has nothing to do with the PC dying as a game medium, as the other platforms are looking pretty dismal as well.

As for the case mod this month, we have a celebration of the return of Futurama to the small screen with a Bender Case Mod.  While the inside does not look all that clean in the way of wiring, I love the mouth being the CD slot.  If you want to see more of the Bender Case mod, head over to The Contaminated for more on the case.

Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days (Square-Enix) – Well, what can be said about a sequel to one of the more infamous games in recent memory.  Yes, the reviews were poor, and the review controversy at Gamespot did not help, but the first title sold in excess of a million copies putting a lock on a sequel happening.  With that said, Dog Days comes to the table with a new visual style that is very striking upon playing, with a handicam styled camera that shakes when you run and has a very raw and grainy look.  Mix that in with graphic kills that are pixelated, and a story that looks to be far more interesting than the first title and Io Interactive might be in store for good reviews this time around.  Also a big plus – the multiplayer is far more stable and functional this time around, a huge plus for PC players that normally had four out of five sessions end in a crash.  Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days hits retail on August 17th, 2010.

Mafia II (2K Games) – It was a long time coming, as the first Mafia title hit PC players back in 2003, but Mafia II is finally ready to hit your computers and it is shaping up to be one of the better titles in 2010.  Mafia II looks to continue its tradition of putting players in the shoes of a newly made man and follow him through a well thought out, and compelling story.  It helps that the Mafia titles have always excelled at capturing not only the feel of a character in the mob, but the style and tone of the era that the game is set in.  Music, clothing and attitudes are all bleeding in 1950′s style.  I still question the idea of having to mix in a sponsorship by Playboy into the game, but hey, as long as the action and style are still in place, I guess I won’t complain about a few bunnies hoping around in my Mafia fantasy.  Mafia II hits retail on August 24th, 2010.

And that is pretty much it for the month of August 2010 in PC gaming.  Sure, there are a few other titles that are coming out, like Battle vs. Chess and Alter Ego, but to be honest, this is the cream of the crop for PC games right now.  Lets hope that September brings us a little more to talk about in the PC space.
