Mass Effect 2 Set to Arrive on PS3 in January 2011

Submitted by on August 17, 2010 – 12:17 pm7 Comments

If there was a game that I would tell PS3 owners that they would have to play on the PC or Xbox 360, it would be the Mass Effect series.  The combination of a thoroughly fleshed out universe mixed with excellent combat is a pinnacle for the console in my opinion.  I have always been a little upset that PS3 fans have not had a chance at playing this fantastic series, but those fans only have to wait a few more months, as Electronic Arts and Bioware are bringing Mass Effect 2 to the PS3 in January 2011.

Now, the strange thing is that only Mass Effect 2 is coming to the PS3, not the first Mass Effect.  It makes me wonder if Electronic Arts had the hooks built into Mass Effect 2 from the start to bring it to the PS3, whereas Mass Effect 1 was designed for Microsoft products under the Microsoft Games Studio umbrella.  Mass Effect 2 will also ship with hours of additional content, most likely the Cerberus stuff, and maybe some of the DLC like Kasumi’s Stolen Memory.

Now I am sure that some fans of Mass Effect and their Xbox 360 will be upset at losing this exclusive, but I feel that is short sighted.  Mass Effect is a great series, and I for one am glad to see that more people will be able to enjoy the universe.  So PS3 fans, welcome to one of the finest gaming franchises in some time.  It was a long wait, but it will be well worth it.

    Yay!
I played part 1 on my PC, but it barely worked.
I'm sure part 2 has higher demands so I've steered clear.

    Such the cool news.

I bought Mass Effect 1 on a Steam sale and it ran so poorly I never did much with it. I plan to get a stronger gaming laptop in Q1 of 2011 anyway so picking up ME2 on the PS3 after that sounds like a no-brainer. I'm excited for some good sci-fi!

I would suggest that if you have ME1 on PC, you wait for the upgrade and then play it at that point. Nothing against getting the PS3 version, but it would suck to make all the decisions in ME1 and not be able to transfer all of that to your ME2 game. But I guess it will all depend on how they handle that. Maybe they will implement a flag system where you can make a series of choices before starting the game.

I just beat the 360 version this weekend for the first time. I'm planning to play through both games again, so it would be great to do this on the PS3. I was hoping for a Mass Effect Trilogy on PS3 though when the 360 version of ME3 came out.

When is Steam dropping on the PS3? It may be possible to like your decisions that way depending n how robust it is and knowing Valve, it will be very robust.

Here is the misconception that people have. It is not Steam, the full service that is coming to the PS3. It is Steamworks. Things like networked saves, multiplayer connectivity and the like. It will not be the Steam marketplace as PC users know it. While we know that the PS3 is the most powerful computer on the planet (Sony says so), it will not be a PC emulator.

I think a lot got lost in the announcement at the Sony press conference. It was Steamworks that was announced, not Steam.

That makes a lot more sense than bring whole service over, thanks for the clarification
