GameStop Inc. Included in Settlement Regarding Marketing Issues
GameStop Inc. was part of a settlement with the New York State’s Attorney’s office regarding deceptive marketing practices. GameStop Inc. was not part of the marketing violations themselves, but an outside marketing company that they hired was charged with misleading customers into charges for membership clubs.
Affinion Group Inc. and several other marketing companies were accused of joining corporate companies in selling memberships to discount clubs. Apparently the clubs would provide discounts to consumers on their purchases, but buried in the fine print were charges for the clubs. The marketing firms settled with the New York Attorney General for the sum of $8 million. GameStop Inc. along with four other companies, agreed to also contribute a total of $2.1 million towards customer education and restitution. No party admitted wrongdoing in the case and as always, the companies have stated that they have changed their business practices.
