First Thirty: Puzzle Quest 2 (XBLA)

The Puzzle Quest series is known for one thing above all else, and that is the successful combination of the classic match-three puzzle and the western RPG. Puzzle Quest 2 does nothing to defy this reputation, and in fact most of what it does differently from the original Puzzle Quest is really just about refining, deepening, and improving. In this episode, the world map is replaced by a more up-close view, where you move from screen to screen in a point-and-click type fashion. One other major difference I’ve seen thus far is the addition of several more puzzles that are not based around battles, including those based around fighting fires, breaking down doors, and looting treasure chests. More notably, there is the ability to equip weaponry in the game which can be used by building up points in an action meter. The battles can get pretty tense and exciting, even though they are, at their core, just a match of Bejeweled… it’s not something you really expect when you hear it described.
I’ll be providing a full review when the time comes.
