Capcom’s Inafune announces “far-out” Mega Man Universe

Submitted by on July 16, 2010 – 11:44 am3 Comments

Mega Man’s creator, Dr. Light Keiji Inafune, was pleased to announce a new Mega Man game today for Capcom. This XBLA title is being described as a new take on the series, and will contain some “far-out” concepts. In essence, this means we know that there’s a game called Mega Man Universe coming for XBLA from Capcom, and it won’t be a traditional Mega Man game. That is all. Want to pick apart the marketing spin? Help yourself to a press release below.

“We are thrilled to finally be able to announce Mega Man Universe,” said Kenji Inafune, Head of Research and Development Management for Capcom Entertainment. “This game will break the mold and challenge the conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be. When fans finally get to see it, I believe they’ll envision their most far-out Mega Man dreams coming true.”

There’s also a teaser trailer at Gamespot. It seems to imply that, in this game, instead of just swapping between abilities, Mega Man may be able to swap between a battery of Capcom characters who are outside of the Mega Man… well, universe. Cutman from Mega Man, Ryu from Street Fighter, Arthur from Ghouls N Ghosts, an 8-bit version of Mega Man, and the horrible looking Mega Man from the box art of the original NES game are shown.

I hope the game looks even half as good as that trailer. Kind of guessing that “stop motion animation” will not be the driving art direction for this game, but I would LOVE to be proven wrong.
