DJ Hero had kind of an image problem when it debuted last fall, and you can probably attribute that to the steep price tag. Worldwide, the game has managed about two million sold, which is not terrible considering Guitar Hero 5 hit about 3 and Beatles Rock Band at 2.8. Still, marketing statements like “DJ Hero was the best music game of 2009″ and “the #1 new videogame intellectual property of 2009″ make me wince. But that’s the sort of thing PR agencies have to gin up to convince people that a good game didn’t suck.

So: this fall’s sequel. The official release is below, but it sounds like more of the same. Plenty more mash-ups (Lady Gaga! Metallica! Kanye!), new playable DJs (Deadmau5?) etc. There will also be a career mode this time out, supplanting the boring tracklist-focused layout of the first game. The release mentions an “electrifying social experience,” but they mean more multiplayer modes, not integration with Facebook and Twitter. FOURHMAN OUT.

To celebrate, Activision is releasing some new free DLC for DJ Hero The First, a Lady Gaga/Deadmau5 track. It will be free this week only, until June 14. Sorry, those of you who own DJ Hero on Wii and PS2, this free track is only for PS3 and 360 owners.

DJ Hero 2 will support the original turntable controller, and will ship in multiple editions depending on how many more turntables you want: 0, 1 or 2. The 2-pack also comes with a microphone. The game is expected for 360, PS3 and Wii this fall. No mention of a PS2 release.
