Seriously you guys: DJ Hero was the most important video game of 2009

Submitted by on June 8, 2010 – 9:38 am4 Comments

DJ Hero had kind of an image problem when it debuted last fall, and you can probably attribute that to the steep price tag. Worldwide, the game has managed about two million sold, which is not terrible considering Guitar Hero 5 hit about 3 and Beatles Rock Band at 2.8. Still, marketing statements like “DJ Hero was the best music game of 2009″ and “the #1 new videogame intellectual property of 2009″ make me wince. But that’s the sort of thing PR agencies have to gin up to convince people that a good game didn’t suck.

So: this fall’s sequel. The official release is below, but it sounds like more of the same. Plenty more mash-ups (Lady Gaga! Metallica! Kanye!), new playable DJs (Deadmau5?) etc. There will also be a career mode this time out, supplanting the boring tracklist-focused layout of the first game. The release mentions an “electrifying social experience,” but they mean more multiplayer modes, not integration with Facebook and Twitter. FOURHMAN OUT.

To celebrate, Activision is releasing some new free DLC for DJ Hero The First, a Lady Gaga/Deadmau5 track. It will be free this week only, until June 14. Sorry, those of you who own DJ Hero on Wii and PS2, this free track is only for PS3 and 360 owners.

DJ Hero 2 will support the original turntable controller, and will ship in multiple editions depending on how many more turntables you want: 0, 1 or 2. The 2-pack also comes with a microphone. The game is expected for 360, PS3 and Wii this fall. No mention of a PS2 release.

The game is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information about DJ Hero 2, please visit www.djhero.com, facebook.com/djhero and twitter.com/djhero.

Yea for free music. Boo for Lady GAGME. When I read that PR announcement, I was like “really? best? you think?”.

I can't wait for FULL MICROPHONE support. WTF?

How about: CUSTOM REMIX SUPPORT, like a REAL DJ. Or is that still a sour taste after their f-up that was GH's custom music. I mean, really, Frequency/Amplitude had remix support, why not a billion-dollar company backed franchise with a proper DJ controller. But alas, I digress.

Last year when DJ Hero was announced I was excited for one reason…The Soundtrack, and now that a sequel has been announced I am once again excited for another 88 tunes I can play on my iPod (sans Lady Gaga though)

So they are offering a free download when I have no way to actually download it. Great. Wonderful. It always happens this way. Why can't I add stuff to my cart from the Website, similar to the Xbox Live Marketplace. At least that way, it would add it as a purchase, and download it when my PS3 was back in service.

Also, it mentions 2 million in sales, but I wonder how many of those happened after the many price drops and clearance pricing. I mean, how many went out to TRU when it was $50. Or Gamestop where it is now $70 as an everyday price.

I came up with the 2 mil by adding up numbers at VGChartz.com… and the weekly sales numbers for DJ Hero shows a predictably massive slide downwards. So I'd say that recent price drops have not done much to move DJ Hero off the shelves.
