So, in our E3 Podcast last week, Fourhman and myself talked about my Rock Band 3 presentation, and the new keyboard and real guitar and how that works into the old library. At the time, it was not mentioned during our presentation, and there was no chance to ask questions about it at the end of the day.
So, with that in mind, I decided to ask the question of Harmonix after the show and see what the deal would be with Rock Band 2 Track Importing, and re-charting of older tracks in regards to the keyboards or the Pro modes that will be coming with Rock Band 3. I figured we would get a “no comment” response from Harmonix, and we did sort of. My response was that nothing has been officially mentioned, but the topics would be touched on in future press releases closer to the release of Rock Band 3.
Now, I am going to go out on a limb and say that the Rock Band 2 track import is a given. No, it has not been confirmed, but Harmonix has done right by its customers in the past, and I assume it will do so in the future. I assume that you will have to buy a new copy of Rock Band 3 to do it, and I would assume there will be a $10 cost to do the import. Not a huge thing, but it would have been nice to get this announcement at E3, just to put end users at ease.
As for the re-charting of old tracks, that is a trickier subject to tackle. On the surface level, it sounds pretty simple. Just add keyboard charts and pro-modes, and then require people to re-download the tracks to their storage devices. But I have to wonder if there are some licensing issues that would come into play with adding content to those tracks. I could be wrong, but it seems as if these licensing agreements are written with specific terms regarding note charting and the like. Now, that said, I have to think that at some point this year, Harmonix probably has already started adding keyboard support to their new DLC tracks, and that will unlock after Rock Band 3 releases. Again, this is not confirmed, and is just speculation by myself, but I have to think that they have been smart enough to do that ahead of schedule. I would hate to have a full band over at my house, and then be limited to the 80+ tracks that are on the disc due to having a keyboardist in the band.
Where do you readers stand on this? Do you care about re-charted Rock Band tracks for Rock Band 3, or do you just accept the limitations that come with adding a new instrument this late in the release schedule? Do you want a track import for Rock Band 2, or does that matter to you? Let us know in the comments or the forums.
