Rock Band 3 – Re-Charting Old Songs, RB2 Track Import Questions

Submitted by on June 25, 2010 – 11:55 am7 Comments

So, in our E3 Podcast last week, Fourhman and myself talked about my Rock Band 3 presentation, and the new keyboard and real guitar and how that works into the old library.  At the time, it was not mentioned during our presentation, and there was no chance to ask questions about it at the end of the day.

So, with that in mind, I decided to ask the question of Harmonix after the show and see what the deal would be with Rock Band 2 Track Importing, and re-charting of older tracks in regards to the keyboards or the Pro modes that will be coming with Rock Band 3.  I figured we would get a “no comment” response from Harmonix, and we did sort of.  My response was that nothing has been officially mentioned, but the topics would be touched on in future press releases closer to the release of Rock Band 3.

Now, I am going to go out on a limb and say that the Rock Band 2 track import is a given.  No, it has not been confirmed, but Harmonix has done right by its customers in the past, and I assume it will do so in the future.  I assume that you will have to buy a new copy of Rock Band 3 to do it, and I would assume there will be a $10 cost to do the import.  Not a huge thing, but it would have been nice to get this announcement at E3, just to put end users at ease.

As for the re-charting of old tracks, that is a trickier subject to tackle.  On the surface level, it sounds pretty simple.  Just add keyboard charts and pro-modes, and then require people to re-download the tracks to their storage devices.  But I have to wonder if there are some licensing issues that would come into play with adding content to those tracks.  I could be wrong, but it seems as if these licensing agreements are written with specific terms regarding note charting and the like.  Now, that said, I have to think that at some point this year, Harmonix probably has already started adding keyboard support to their new DLC tracks, and that will unlock after Rock Band 3 releases.  Again, this is not confirmed, and is just speculation by myself, but I have to think that they have been smart enough to do that ahead of schedule.  I would hate to have a full band over at my house, and then be limited to the 80+ tracks that are on the disc due to having a keyboardist in the band.

Where do you readers stand on this?  Do you care about re-charted Rock Band tracks for Rock Band 3, or do you just accept the limitations that come with adding a new instrument this late in the release schedule?  Do you want a track import for Rock Band 2, or does that matter to you?  Let us know in the comments or the forums.

I also think a Rock Band 2 track import is a given – they have said something along the lines of everything except The Beatles will be playable in Rock Band 3, even if they didn't name Rock Band 2 specifically, I think it implies it.

I agree that they have probably been making much of their recent DLC with keyboards and pro-mode in mind, as it would seem ridiculous not to. The question is, how far back have they been doing this?

As far as making everything playable with keyboards and pro-mode, my guess is that nothing on RBN will be. And they will probably start with the “best of” the DLC catalog – maybe skipping stuff like the covers they released earlier on. Many songs don't have keyboard so they would only have to do pro-mode. (Or maybe they'll add keyboard to some, pro-mode to some, and both to some?)

I think the biggest hurdle is pro-mode. I heard them say that each song has a tutorial for pro-mode and that seems like a lot of work to go back over 1350 songs and essentially re-chart every part on every difficulty again. It doesn't seem financially sound.

I really think they should add the 'real guitar and keyboard' functionality to all previous songs when you import them into Rock Band 3. I don't care if it costs a further $10.00 per disc to add real guitar and vocals and $1 per online download.

The Beatles disc rarely get's played at my house because of the inability to import songs to rock band 2 like all the other releases. To have a good party where everyone can sing and play their preferred song you don't want to have to start swapping discs over?

Also I really hope they add an audio mixer to Rock Band 3 like in 'Guitar Hero 5' giving you the ability to adjust the volume level of each instrument individually (so for example you could perform an acoustic version of a tune with just the guitar and vocals). On the Beatles game you can't even mute the original vocals but instead can lower them slightly with a button on the options menu.

Look forward to rockin’ out on RockBand 3 yeah!

I would also like to know would there be a 3 mic harmonizing in the game like the beatles for songs that have harmonies. and are the bought and paid for DLC from past going to get a face lift i have 270 downloaded songs and don't want to have to start over for the newer technology. but will definately invest in new instrument controllers but what about drums all talk about keyboard and guitars what about an unbreakable foot pedal and cymbals that don't fall

Are we able to import our own songs into the game?

Not only financially, also physically for the people at HMX…Should be around 2000 tracks now amirite?.. they have to listen to master tapes carefully, watch live recordings, it would be a never ending quest.

Instead they could keep the current DB and create a new “promode” DB with new songs.. I suppose theyre gonna do that right? As far as I heared RB2 import with pro mode will be more expensive then the regular import mode.

Still sick that they keep the less fortunate users in mind, that still gotta use an old RB2 or GHWT drum kit/ plastic guitar… props for HMX!

I am a keyboardist in real life. I have played the rock band games with the keyboard and guitar. I am still partial to the keyboard just because I love playing the piano. I am not all that happy that the new games that were made after Rock Band 3 do not support the keyboard. Rock Band Country 2 doesn't support it and can not use the keyboard. Not supporting the keyboard limits the players
