Ones to Watch: PS3 and PSP for June 2010
I personally found it so strange that Hideo Kojima would opt to put a Metal Gear Solid game billed as MGS 5 exclusively on the PSP, but given the platform’s very strong performance in Japan and the fact that the PS3 hasn’t made its way out of a third place position in terms of worldwide shipping units, it’s not such a hard thing to understand. Add on the fact that the PSP is a very well known 5-year-old platform at this point with a cheap dev kit and far lower resolution texture and sound requirements compared to the current generation of consoles and it makes great business sense.
Unless, of course, you really want something that won’t be pirated in seconds flat and ends up selling terribly as a result. But I digress.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is my top pick on Sony’s platforms for the month, but there are some other goodies headed our way as well. I think Joe Danger (PSN for PS3) will scratch a special itch for me with crazy motorcycle stunts you can play, create, and share online. Lego Harry Potter (PSP, PS3) is destined to have lots of pantomimed in-jokes for, well, everyone given how far reaching the series appeal is. And why not, Transformers: War for Cybertron could be good. For more, hit the jump.
6/1: Planet Minigolf arrives from Zen Studios for PS3 on the PSN. I imagine they couldn’t get the Zen Minigolf name so they could match it up with Zen Pinball, but if the quality of this game matches that of Zen Pinball it should be rather good.
6/1: Alpha Protocol finally lands from Obsidian for the PS3, published by Sega. Reviews so far have been a little rough on this one, but the overall third-person-shooter spy game still appeals to me.
6/8: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker slinks into view on the PSP and PSP Go from Konami. Our UK friends will get this game on June 18th.
6/8: Joe Danger for the PS3 lands on the PSN lets you play, create, and share daredevil stunt tracks online and off with your buddies. The trailers look like a lot of fun, and I’m hoping we see a demo of this game before too long so it can show off what it has to offer to loads of curious onlookers.
6/8: Green Day: Rock Band arrives for the PS3 for those of you hankering for a new band-flavored version of the game.
6/22: Transformers: War for Cybertron rolls onto the PS3 and aims to salvage the Michael Bay-abused reputation of those giant talking and transforming robots from the 1980s. Yes our nostalgia is very rose-colored for these guys, now nicknamed Generation 1 Transformers by the collector crowd, but this game could be the one that kindles the spark of that not-so-bad PS2 Transformers game from a few years back.
6/29: Singularity lands on the PS3 as another shooter, so why is it special? Because it has Raven Software’s fingerprints on it.
6/29: Let’s not forget our quarterly installment of LEGO gaming, this time with LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 on PS3, PSP, and everything else short of a tamagotchi screen. Do they really have to put Years 1-4 on it to rub in the fact that they probably plan to make more of them? Can’t you just pretend this game is great by itself and put a 2 on the end of the next one, as if you’re pleasantly surprised it sold well enough so you decided to design a sequel then instead of planning for one ahead of time? No? Oh ok.
