EVE Is Still Down During Cluster Move (Updated)
The EVE Online server cluster, which serves the single-shard EVE universe everyone plays in at the same time, was set to be offline yesterday during a move to a new data center home. This downtime extended past the initial 11am EST deadline into the afternoon, then into the evening, and as of 7am today is still going strong.
My heart goes out to those guys. It can’t be easy to move something as complex as the high performance EVE server cluster, but I will give them a little bit of snark for relying on Microsoft SQL Server as their database. Sure they probably have the best tech support anyone could ever buy, but they do admit that this extra delay has to do with issues in their “database configuration”.
The current estimate is to have everything back online by “midday Thursday” which if we want to be technical and say that’s 1200 GMT, we’re looking at 8am EST or so. One side effect of the cluster move is that their main site is down, as are the forums, so if there are any irate players out there hopping mad at the extra downtime we certainly can’t hear them squeal. Is this really a bad thing?
Update 2: The game came up on time at noon EST, and CCP will be making amends with some free skill points to accounts active at the start of the downtime.
Update: it’s been bumped back to 1600 GMT (12:00 EST) for additional tests.
