Classic Dreamcast Games To PSN, Xbox Arcade, Finally Confirmed

Submitted by on June 10, 2010 – 12:53 pm4 Comments

For weeks now, we have seen leaked screens showing Xbox Arcade shots of Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventures, Jet Grind Radio and more.  However, even with all the leaks, Sega had confirmed nothing up to this point regarding any of these titles coming to current generation consoles.  The leaks were cool, and would bring games from a beloved console to new gamers 11 years after the fact.

Well, now, the news has been confirmed, and Dreamcast titles will be coming to both Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network starting Fall 2010.  The first of the titles to make there way to those consoles will be Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure, both classics from the Dreamcast.  These two titles will be released around the 11th anniversary of the Dreamcast release, which was on September 9th, 1999, or for marketing purposes, 9-9-99 here in the United States.

The games will be complete ports from the Dreamcast, so gamers will be receiveing the original titles in their original form, with no real upgrades.  This will be a boon to those that like getting the original experience, rather than something like Han Solo shooting first.

Check the jump for more info as well as a few more screens from both Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure.

DREAMCAST GAMES TO MAKE DIGITAL RETURN

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (June 10, 2010) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced plans to bring classic titles from its popular Dreamcast™ console to Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PlayStation®Network later this year. Sonic Adventure™ and Crazy Taxi™ will be the first two classics made available, with Sonic leading the pack in Fall 2010 for the 11th anniversary of the launch of the Dreamcast in the United States.

Each game is based on the original Dreamcast incarnation, featuring all of the gameplay that older players fell in love with, whilst allowing a new audience to discover it for the very first time. The games incorporate all-new enhancements and features such as high resolution visuals and surround sound. Online leader boards are now implemented, allowing players to compare their skills with friends across the world! In addition to this, all-new Achievement and Trophy integration will be available for each game released.

Launched on September 9, 1999, the SEGA Dreamcast is one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed consoles of all time. Featuring a software library of over 650 titles, the system was widely hailed as being ahead of its time, and was the first to introduce online console gaming, with Internet support for games through a built in modem.

“The Dreamcast is fondly remembered by a large community of dedicated fans as a console that was ahead of its time in terms of graphics, quality and online gaming” commented Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. “There are few things that are more requested from us than making Dreamcast classics available for download in today’s digital market place. We’re very excited to begin offering gamers our beloved Dreamcast titles again on the current console systems.”

Sonic Adventure will be available for download in Fall 2010. Both Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will be on display at SEGA’s booth (#2023) at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo.

And, as with everything else that tries to trade on Dreamcast fandom, these games will not sell. How did NiGHTS on Wii sell, and that was the THE long-lost Dreamcast franchise.

I mean, the original Crazy Taxi? I got over that franchise on the day they added taxi missions to GTA.

Sonic Adventure is a 3D title that boasts world exploration in addition to Sonic the Hedgehog's trademark speed. Crazy Taxi is a driving game challenges the player to pick up passengers and drop them off at their requested destinations within a time limit. The rules of the road do not apply, of course…I'm sure we'll all be nostalgic in playing these games again.

the funny thing is you say nights is the long lost dreamcast franchise. nights was a sega saturn series that made several cameo appearances in dreamcast games until they finally gave into fandom and released another nights game.

these games will sell just as well as the “ps1 classics” on psn. porting the games is a small endeavor compared to making new games and since the release is digital theres almost no overhead. welcome to the money.

i just hope i can carry some on my psp as i do with my ps1 games. if not ill still enjoy playing them on ps3
