First Thirty: Rocket Knight (PSN)

So now I’m four stages or so into Konami’s new Rocket Knight sequel, the PSN version (it’s also on 360 and Steam), and I think I’m in love. Having played some Bionic Commando, some Castlevania: the Adventure Rebirth (that one to completion) and some of the other older retro revivals like New Super Mario Bros Wii, so far I’m the most hooked on this one. It doesn’t hurt that I was in love with Sparkster’s rocket pack mechanic before I even began.

It also doesn’t hurt that the game looks great, sounds phenomenal, and controls spot-on. I like that the default difficulty is somewhat gentler than that of the original Rocket Knight Adventures, and that there’s a hard difficulty as well (which I will be trying for the review).

All that said, I need to shoot some holes in this right now. There are some pretty sloppy, but minor, mistakes in this game. For example, when you’re at the summary screen at the end of a stage and it’s counting up your points and stuff, the icon in the corner telling you to press X (or A on the 360 version) is exactly on top of the icon telling you the same button is to continue. This is the case in both versions of the game, and you can see it in the demo. Also be aware that while they look the same, the PSN version seems to be running at half the 360 version’s framerate, but I’ll be checking that by swapping back and forth before I mention it in the review.
