Another weekend in the bag, but what kind of bag was it? Did it involve much stabbing, blood and brutal kills? Or maybe you grappled across rooftops, popping open a parachute to glide up and over an obstacle in search of upgrades helpfully stored in shiny boxes visible day and night? Maybe a little of both?

Despite my grumbling about God of War III’s replay restrictions I did continue my replay of it to pick up Trophies I missed the first time around. I segued into Just Cause 2 for the PS3 after stalling at a certain fight against a fiery cerberus, its exploding hellhounds, and a few satyrs on the side.

I figured Joe had been exaggerating in his assessment of the voice work and cut scenes in the game in the review of the PC version. Joe was right, unfortunately, it is pretty bad, especially when they clearly spent a lot of design time on the open world antics Rico can do. The voice work is mediocre by last-generation standards. Coming off of something so incredible as God of War III’s voice work this is pretty rough.

That said, the game definitely reminds me very strongly of Mercenaries 2 – something I enjoyed getting a platinum Trophy in just before my PS3 croaked last summer, taking the EA-locked saved games with it. Look for a future dissection of what Just Cause 2 does better than other games of its type. If it can stay fun I can see myself returning to vacation in Panau from other games in the months ahead.

What did you play over the weekend?

I have spent so much time wandering around Paris bombing Nazi installations in The Saboteur. I have 25 hours on the clock, with only halfway through the storyline missions and only a third of the way through everything else.

My favorite is still the leader of the reapers, or as she says it, “Da Reee-paaaas”. Oh that dialog was so horrible. It makes “jay-sun” look like award winning material. I have been forging my way through Final Fantasy XIII, and all I can say is WTF?!? I cannot figure out what anything in that story means. Fal'cie, l'cie, focus, shaba-daba-do, it all means nothing to me. Great looking game, and the first Final Fantasy game that I have actually enjoyed combat, but considering I have only played FFVII and FFVIII, this may mean nothing.
