iPad app bridges gap between board games and video games

Submitted by on April 8, 2010 – 10:28 am3 Comments

There’s an iPhone app “Game Table” that includes touchable, no-frills versions of Chess, Checkers and Poker… but on the iPad it really has a chance to shine. It’s one thing to tap through a Chess match on an iPhone, but on a sharable, viewable 9-inch iPad screen you have effectively duplicated the board game experience without the cleanup.

The press release for Game Table on iPad follows, but I’m more excited about the greater potential for tabletop games on the iPad. We can think bigger than Checkers. As an old time Magic player, I’d love to see CCGs show up in iPad form. Each player could bring their own iPad to the table and then WiFi them all together to create a connected, virtual gamespace. It’s like Microsoft Surface, but in hardware that actually exists in a consumer-friendly form.

There’s a lot of great tabletop/card games out there that ultimately failed in the marketplace (Doomtown, L5R, Icehouse, Kingdom Hearts), plus plenty of games still in production that could leverage the iPad in ways similar to how Magic: The Gathering works on PC. Naturally, the collectible guys will be the first to the table since they can then own us with DLC expansion schemes, but I still see a place for classic single-deck experiences like Fluxx or Uno.

Game Table sells for one single dollar, minus a penny, for iPad or iPhone.

  • iPad Poker Gamer

The iPad was released in the UK yesterday. I was going to buy one to play online poker but for some reason Apple will not approve real money poker apps, even though they've recently allow lottery and sweepstakes apps into the App Store. Anyone know why they've got a problem with real money poker apps?

Hi iPad Pker Gammer. I found a real money poker site that works on the iPad. It's called switchpoker.com I've only played on it with play money so far but they site say it'll be launching for real money this Friday (8th October) so you should check it out if you're still looking for somewhere to play. It's not available as an app so no fee to apple!!
