Free episodic Doctor Who game: best news ever?

I’m sorry if that sounds hyperbolic, but for Whovians like me, it’s just one good thing after another: first, the fantastic return to form last Saturday, and now this! As you may know, myself and some of the other writers here at Aeropause are pretty big fans of Doctor Who, and so for me at least, the combination of two of my favourite things is pretty damn exciting. Alright, let’s rewind. CVG has just announced that the game – titled “Doctor Who: The Adventure Games” is going to be a series of four ‘standalone’ episodes (with the first to be released in June) developed by Charles Cecil (of Broken Sword fame) and Sumo Digital (using their proprietary Immersion engine) for PC and Mac , and written by Steven Moffat (who has written all of the best episodes to date) and Phil Ford, who wrote… The Waters of Mars, but hey, you can’t win ‘em all. And Murray Gold’s doing the music! More after the break!

You play as the new, shiny, Matt Smith Doctor, with your companion Amy Pond joining you – both actors (Mr Smith and Kieron Gillen Karen Gillan) are voicing their respective characters. Gameplay will consist of “stealth, problem solving and mini-games”, though according to Mr Cecil “it’s not an adventure in a scratch-your-head, using-two-objects-in-a-strange-way.” The first three episodes will be released as the series is going, and the fourth between the end of the series and the Christmas special. There will be ‘”locations impossible to create on television” and Cecil says “”the stories are more ambitious than an episode. They tell more story.” I know I referred to this in the title, but it bears mentioning again: it’s FREE. Free! Woo! I can think of no better use for the licence fee!

Stephen Moffat had this to say:

Children don’t just watch Doctor Who – they join in. They make up games, invent their monsters, create their own stories. Now, there’s something else – now they can be the Doctor in brand new episodes. Doctor Who: The Adventure Games will offer fans of the Doctor a unique opportunity to enter his world, face his challenges and grapple with his deadliest foes.

For more on this, there’s a press release on the BBC Doctor Who Site CVG has two articles here and here and there’s a six-page preview in the current issue of PC Gamer (which I will now be buying). Also, Develop has a tonne of pictures here, if these weren’t enough for you. C’mon people, get excited. A good, free Doctor Who game! Does it get better than this?

This is great news. I am assuming the BBC has a hand in this, and your TV license payment is helping the funding of the game. All of that said, I wonder if this will be available to Dr. Who fans like me in the states? I hope so, otherwise, I will be a sad panda.; Just remember BBC, I actually bought the box sets when they were released here in the states.
