Steam to come to Mac?

What? What’s going on? I visited Rock, Paper Shotgun, and they had what appeared to be one part of a six-part puzzle. The other were to be found at MacRumours, MacNN, Shacknews and Eurogamer, and the sixth piece is yet to be revealed.[UPDATE: The sixth piece is at Macworld. Picture after the break] Every picture (view after the break) has a iPhone like row of six dots at the bottom, with one shaded in. Each one of them implies that Steam is coming to Mac OS X. Exciting! Hit the jump for more!

As you can see, each of the pictures is either Apple with a Valve twist or Valve with an Apple twist, from the “I’m a PC ” TF2 turret and Portal turret to the Gordon Freeman with what looks like a Mac logo on his chest where the lambda should be. What implications does this have? Well, it could mean that Valve has worked out a way of running Windows games on a Mac, perhaps some form of WINE, and they could possibly have reached a deal with publishers to apply this process to games on Steam so one could buy games from Steam and play them on the Mac or PC (must emphasise this is WILD speculation, I really have no idea)?

Whatever’s going on, it looks like it’s going to be really cool. I’m expecting for more to be revealed at this year’s GDC. All I really want now is a Steve Jobs keynote where he talks about how awesome HL2 Episode 3 is going to be…

This would be very sweet! I switched to Mac last year and having Steam would be awesome. I don't really game much on my computer anymore, but it would justify the giant video card I put in my Mac Pro.

It seems like the question that comes up a lot is what non-casual games are on the Mac. Beyond the ports of AAA games that came to the Mac much later than their Windows counterparts, there have been some companies who do support Mac and PC right out of the box natively, Blizzard being one of the more notable.

Utilizing the power of the Unity game engine, you can quite easily port a game to both platforms without much “tweaking” at all. With Unity gaining popularity (http://unity3d.com/gallery/game-list/) you’re likely to see more cross platform titles being developed. For example, we are and indie developer, but we are making what we consider to be a AAA quality game that will be for Mac and PC right out of the box.
