Sony: Don’t Use Your Non-Slim PS3 Yet (updated)

Submitted by on March 1, 2010 – 5:02 pm7 Comments

Update 3: I can confirm Joystiq’s advice to get Trophies back worked for me. I put the game in, loaded it, exited to the XMB, then sync’d Trophies and the Trophies I had earned in God of War were back.

Update 2: Sony’s saying service is restored on the PS Blog. No mention of Trophy issues.

Update: It looks like pre-slim PS3′s are working now, and awarding Trophies with the correct date and time. Sony hasn’t yet made an announcement, though. (Gamespot)

Turns out that the PSN wasn’t broken — at least that’s what they’re saying even though Sony’s site now looks suspiciously like it was upgraded recently — it’s some aspect of the clock within the PlayStation 3 systems themselves that’s busted, but only with non-Slim PS3′s. Sony’s working on a fix, and in the meantime they’re advising everyone with “phat” PS3′s to not use them at all (thanks, Joystiq). And really, Fourhman’s mushroom cloud image was too good to not use again.

The leading theory is that some part of the PS3 wants 2010 to be a leap year while the real calendar knows better. The conflict within the PS3′s firmware is what caused the calendar to party like it’s 1999 and it’s still not yet known if lost Trophy data is going to come back when Sony finds a fix.

This is a pretty mean black eye for its older systems, in addition to the Yellow Light of Death they have gotten from time to time, too. In the meantime, I’ll be playing my PSP and hoping my couple of days of unsync’d God of War trophies will come back when the fix is in.

This situation is pretty outrageously unacceptable. What kind of machines still freak out about leap years?

Funny thing is that the outage does not necessarily bother me. Yes I would like to play my $60 copy of Heavy Rain, but it is not the thing that bothers me. It is the complete lack of updates from Sony that irritates me. One blog post yesterday, and one this morning? That is it. While XBox Live is not perfect, Major Nelson is all over twitter with updates and status reports evern 10-15 minutes. He says what is being fix, how long, etc.

Sony, just shrugs and says wait a day, because we are too fucking lazy to fix a date issue. I am waiting for the press release that tells everyone to be ready for this every four years in the future of our 500 year life cycle on this PS3 console. Way to go Sony. It was about time for a mess up like this. I mean every time you start doing well, you find a way to take two steps backwards.
