Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

October 28, 2011 – 12:44 pm |

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

Our lack of PlayStation Move coverage speaks volumes

Opinion coming: I mean, whatever.

There’s some nice write-ups at Kotaku, but the Move announcements smell like more motion-controlled crap mini-games. How is it that something like this can launch four years after the Wii came out, and the first batch of games are still goofy Wii 1.1 junk, with titles like “Move Party”? And could that photo be any more Wii-like?

Sure, the interior tech is improved over the stock Wii Remotes. It damn well better be, since it’s 2010. It also requires a PlayStation Eye camera, which almost no one owns, so get ready for expensive bundles this holiday season.

Sure, there’s no doubt one amazing upcoming game that will manage to combine HD graphics with motion controlled gameplay and not seem like a cheap Wii knockoff. Maybe it will be God of War Presents Kratos and Friends Brutal Olympiad Featuring Archery.

Sure, I haven’t touched it yet so what do I know about how fresh it feels.

But none of that changes the fact that this is a follow-the-leader reaction, issued primarily to remove a bullet point from Nintendo’s marketing plan. Sony’s new attack could be “We have this same crap now too, so you can stop buying that ugly standard-def unit with the bullshit online service.”

I’m all for video game systems evolving over time, but where’s the Move’s great leap forward? Depth perception? No tether cord? Like the Wii Remote+Nunchuk, the Move will be limited to certain types of games and certain types of control schemes… and if you do not enjoy those specific types, you simply won’t be buying a Move. Sounds like our highest hope for the Move is a high-def port of Madworld. The best part about the Move is, unlike the Wii, you at least have a kickass “traditional” controller available by default.

Don’t even tell me that shooter fans are going to get in line for this, since similar control schemes were tried on Wii and roundly ignored. Does anybody really think that the SOCOM audience is going to prefer to play the fourth installment with Move controls?

Thus far, I like the proposed LittleBigPlanet Move integration. And I’m waiting for the big REVISED EYEPET announcement where they add a bunch of Move controls to the delayed virtual pet. But Move Party? No thanks.

I'm happy to wait for reviews on this first crop of games when they show up at the last possible minute in November or something. If it works well in my relatively dim-lighting living room that makes PS Eye games not work, I might pick it up just for fun with LittleBigPlanet.

If it does work in lots of kinds of light, this could be the tech that redeems the PS Eye and drives more titles that use it. Remakes of every PS Eye game that knows the location of the Move and Subcontroller could replace their sketchy way of trying to detect where your hands and body are.

As always, the proof will be in the reviews.

  • SOCOM Party! Now I'm gettin' me a PS3.

    SOLD!

  • OH MAN says:

I had a 'Move Party' with Jack Tretton's MOM last night!

    OH SNAP!

    I guess.

  • I can't really say this makes me excited, I worry to about Natal as well. The games Sony showed just looked so incredibly boring and unoriginal. It seems like the devs have not had much time to work with this thing. I barely use my PS3 as it is, they are gonna need some kind of killer game to really make this thing sell past the fanboys.

on the newest cagcast cheapy said he was going to have a contest to see who could get the ball the furthest shoved up a random users ass. it was funny as hell.

Uh, hello. I think you mean, “We have this same crap now too, so you can stop buying that ugly ENHANCED-def unit with the bullshit online service.” Come on, now.

Wow sensing by the comments maybe Sony isn't making the right decision. I kind of figured it was a bad idea, but I figured Sony loyalists would just naturally say it was a great idea even if they did knock the Wii. Sounds expensive, so I'm hoping they do a price job to try help sales.

Anything that can help my chances of getting FF XIII would be great.

I just like how it looks so much like the Nintendo control set. And the fact that you need the $40 Playstation Eye is a steep hill to overcome as well. I mean, we hear the rumors of $50-100 for Natal, so can Playstation Move hit that bulletpoint price with all the hardware involved. And what happens to those that already bought the Eye. Will we have to buy it again just to have Glowy Testicle controller?

I have little love for Natal either, but I do like it for just the user interface aspects, like moving through my Netflix Queue, or signing me in by walking in front of the camera. Those kind of things are cool, but not as an actual controller for games.

  • Joe Fourhman says:

You know, I hope this means we'll at least get proper masturbation motion controls on the PS3 version of No More Heroes.

  • Joe Fourhman says:

One hopes the Eye is waaaay cheaper than $40. From what I know, the PS3 Eye is actually nearly technologically identical to the PS2 EyeToy… so that damn thing ought to be $1.50 by now.

  • mclazyj says:

The same could be said about the technology in a lot of the consoles now, but that does not mean the price will come down. The PSEye is still $30-40 depending on the retailer, so I would assume that price will have to be factored into the Move.

To be honest, I don't even care at this point. I just want good games, rather than pointless gravytraining off of other people's control schemes.

  • mclazyj says:

Dude, that guy has to be in his 50's so I don't even want to think about his mom in that way.
