What’s the One Thing that could change everything?

When Apple announced the iPad a couple weeks ago, a lot of people said “Well, it looks nice, but why doesn’t it have a camera?” Which logically positions the camera as The One Thing holding back the device. Add a camera and suddenly there’s no complaints.

So I started thinking, what is that One Thing that our beloved tech companies could do that would change everything. With one small change, they could completely upset our preconceived notions of what the brands stand for and perhaps attract a whole new level of interest. These items are the answer to the statement, “I’m not buying Device X because…” I came up with a couple, what would you add?

Microsoft: Drop monthly fee for Xbox Live.

Nintendo: HD.

Sony: 100% backwards compatibility with PS1/PS2 game disks (with generic, time-based Trophies).

Apple: Announce full compatibility for PC games.

Microsoft: Form official partnership with Apple to connect iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch with Xbox Live.

Nintendo: Give Wii robust friend-connecting online service with family-friendly video chat.

Sony: Drop PS3 price to $149.99. (Sure, a cheaper price would work for any device, but Sony has been hit harder than most over the initial price tag.)

Rock Band: Introduce service where the game imports music you already own (in iTunes or whatever), and then adds official note charts created by Harmonix for a miniscule price (like, a dime per song).

Crash Bandicoot: Drop $100 bills from sky across the nation.
